Know the right word to use: is it “Hacker” or “Cracker”
The term "hacker" is often misunderstood and misused in popular culture. Many people mistakenly associate hackers with malicious activities, but this isn't entirely accurate.
A hacker is an individual who enjoys exploring and learning about computer systems, often with the goal of improving security, discovering vulnerabilities, or enhancing functionality. Hacker is a general term which can be categorized into different types based on their intentions:
White Hat Hackers: I call them good guys. These are ethical hackers who work to protect organizations and individuals by finding and fixing security vulnerabilities. They often work as cybersecurity professionals and are vital in defending against cyber threats.
Gray Hat Hackers: These hackers may explore systems without malicious intent but do so without permission. Their actions might still benefit security in the long run, but they operate in a legal gray area.
Black Hat Hackers: These are bad guys also referred to as crackers. These are the individuals who use their skills for criminal activities, such as stealing data, spreading malware, or disrupting services. They are the ones most people wrongly refer to as "hackers."
cracker is someone who breaks into systems with malicious intent, often to steal, destroy, or exploit information for personal gain. Crackers are the true "bad guys" in the cybersecurity world, and it's essential to distinguish them from ethical hackers.
Using the term "hacker" to describe all individuals who engage in cybercrime is not only incorrect but also undermines the valuable work done by ethical hackers.
Let's aim to use these terms accurately to appreciate the positive contributions that hackers make to our digital world.
