Chilufya Tayali faces life imprisonment

Chilufya Tayali, leader of the Economic and Equity Party (EEP), is set to learn his fate today as Magistrate Kelvin Soma delivers judgment in a case where Tayali is accused of inciting mutiny. However, he will not be present in court, having been out of the country for months, thereby escaping trial.

The case against him stems from a Facebook post alleged to have been made between March 1 and April 4, 2022, in which he attempted to persuade members of the defense force to abandon their duty and allegiance to the President. Tayali pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are contrary to Section 48, Subsection A of the Penal Code Chapter 47 of the Laws of Zambia.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, as stipulated by the Penal Code Act. This law considers mutiny, or inciting others to commit mutiny, a felony punishable by life imprisonment.

The case has been ongoing since 2022, with several adjournments, including one in May 2023 due to the absence of witnesses. Today's judgment will bring some closure to the matter, although Tayali's absence may complicate the proceedings.

MR. WESLEY CHIBAMBO (DANDY KRAZY ) DIES.

Mr. Wesley Chibambo has died.

Mr Chibambo who sustained multiple injuries in a road traffic accident, was admitted to the UTH-Adult in the early hours of yesterday. He underwent an emergency operation later in the day. However, he remained in a critical condition despite various treatment interventions employed by our health staff.
He was certified dead at 01:42 hours this morning.

We wish to pass our sincere condolences to the family and public as they mourn their loved one.

DESPITE having a pair of his own, a man of Kitwe was in early morning of yesterday found red-handed, savagely cutting the testicles of a defenseless mentally-ill man with a knife, in an attempt to steal them.

According to witnesses, the gruesome act, which nightmares are made of was discovered by a group of young boys who stumbled upon the scene while rummaging through the dumpsite behind Zambeef Buchi branch around 05:30 hours.

The victim, a familiar face in the area, was found bleeding profusely, his body mutilated beyond recognition.

As the boys confronted the suspect, he callously abandoned his knife and fled the scene, leaving behind speculation and horror.

Despite a frantic chase, the testicle thief managed to evade capture, sparking a massive manhunt.

Police officers rushed to the scene, and upon examining the victim, they were met with a horrific sight.

COURT ORDERS GBM TO REPAY US$899,970 AND K20,000,000 TO STATE

The Economic and Financial Crimes Court has ordered former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, popularly known as GBM, to repay a total of US$899,970 and K20,000,000 to the State.

This follows his conviction on corrupt practices in which he earned the said money through contracts fraudulently awarded to his company Curzon Global Limited.

Mr Mwamba was on October 9th 2024 sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court.

He was convicted on eight counts of conflict of interest, four counts of possession of properties deemed to be proceeds of crime and one count of money laundering.

The former Minister was facing a total of 13 counts of corrupt practices.

In a statement the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Head of Corporate Communications disclosed that the Commiasion applied for a payment order under Section 15(a) of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.

“The application was made after it was established that the funds in question had been obtained through contracts fraudulently awarded to Mwamba’s company, Curzon Global Limited, during his tenure as Minister of Defence,” Mr Moono said.

“In its submission, the Anti-Corruption Commission stated that it was erroneous that Mwamba having been convicted of possession of property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime should continue to enjoy the benefits derived from proceeds of crime.”

Mr Moono added that Principal Resident Magistrate Stanford Ngobola ruled that on the basis of the Commission’s affidavit evidence, he was satisfied that a forfeiture order should be made in respect of section 10 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act No. 19 of 2010.

“Magistrate Ngobola subsequently ordered payment to the Government of Zambia against Mwamba the following: Payment in the sum of UDS 399,985.00 in respect of count 10, in default a want of distress is to issue against Mwamba,” he said.

“Payment in the sum of UDS 499,985 in respect of count 11, in default a want of distress is to issue against Mwamba; Payment in the sum of K10,000,000.00 in respect of count 12, in default a want of distress is to issue against Mwamba.”

He said the Magistrate also ordered the payment in the sum of K10,000,000.00 in respect of count 13, in default a want of distress is to issue against Mwamba.
