COPPERBELT ON HIGH ALERT: FLASH FLOOD THREAT ESCALATES AS ITCZ STABILIZES OVER PROVINCE
The Zambia Meteorological Department has tonight placed the Copperbelt on High Alert, warning of imminent flash flooding over the next 24 hours. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues its heavy oscillation across the country, mining towns from Kitwe to Chililabombwe are being urged to brace for significant rainfall.
While the national alert covers the Eastern and Muchinga provinces, the Copperbelt has been specifically elevated to a High Risk zone. Key districts including Ndola, Kitwe, Luanshya, Chingola, Mufulira, and Kalulushi are currently under the Red Zone.
Meteorologists attribute this to rapidly rising soil moisture levels. Following recent heavy falls, the ground is nearing its saturation point, meaning any further downpours tonight will likely result in immediate runoff and localized flooding.
In the mining sector, authorities are advising heightened vigilance near tailings dams and open-pit operations. Historically, heavy falls during this period have led to structural concerns and environmental risks. In urban areas, the combination of intense thunderstorms and blocked drainage systems poses a direct threat to low-lying settlements and peri-urban townships.
