GIFT KALUMBA CHAMPIONS INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT IN KITWE

BY LLOYD MWAPE

Kitwe aspiring mayor Gift Kalumba has emphasized the need for inclusive development, saying empowering communities is one of the key factors that can transform and accelerate development in the city.

In an interview with Hype FM news Mr. Kalumba said development can only be achieved when communities are empowered with information, innovative ideas, and opportunities to build strong partnerships with local leadership.
He added that creating mutual relationships between residents and stakeholders, as well as establishing early childhood education centres for children living with disabilities, would help promote inclusivity and improve access to education.

He further stated that communities should be linked to academic institutions through strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing skills development.
Mr. Kalumba noted that such collaborations can equip residents with practical knowledge in areas such as waste management and other community development initiatives, thereby contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable Kitwe.

POLITICAL ACTIVIST CALLS FOR ISSUE BASED, PEACEFUL ELECTIONS AHEAD OF 2026 POLLS

By: Evelyn Ngoma

Political activist Rudolf Mwanza has urged Zambians to embrace issue-based politics and peaceful campaigns, describing a calm electoral environment as a sign of democratic growth rather than voter apathy.

In a statement made available to HYPE FM news, Mr. Mwanza argued that elections marked by less violence, intimidation, and loss of life represent the kind of democracy Zambia needs. He noted that no citizen wants a return to past elections characterized by fear, bloodshed, and political violence.

Mr.Mwanza stressed that Zambia must advance toward a political culture where policy ideas take precedence over chaos, and where peace is viewed as the true measure of democratic progress.

He observed that while some citizens have described the current campaign period as boring compared to previous years, the calm reflects political maturity.

Mr. Mwanza noted that elections should be judged by the quality of ideas presented and candidates’ ability to offer practical solutions to local and national challenges, not by drama, violence, or money distributed in communities.

He criticized the historical association of Zambian politics with handouts, saying the practice distorted the purpose of elections and fostered unhealthy expectations that politics is transactional.

Mr. Mwanza emphasized that elections are constitutional processes for evaluating visions, policies, and manifestos, not marketplaces for buying popularity. Adding that the distribution of money during campaigns does not reflect the natural character of democratic politics.

ZRA DENIES HOLDING POLITICAL PARTY GOODS, SAYS TAX ENFORCEMENT REMAINS IMPARTIAL

By: Evelyn Ngoma

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that it is holding goods belonging to a political party or entity, stating that no such cargo is in its custody.

In a statement, ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala urged the public to disregard the claims, describing them as false.

He said the Authority operates as a professional institution mandated to protect the interests of all Zambians and that its mandate should not be linked to political interference.

Mr. Nzala stated that investigations into reports of trucks belonging to a political organization being impounded found the allegations to be untrue. The Authority explained that all detentions at borders and warehouses follow standard customs verification and tax compliance procedures. It maintained that cargo interceptions at borders and checkpoints are routine enforcement operations meant to verify tax compliance, not politically motivated actions.

Mr. Nzala stressed that ustoms duties apply to all imported materials regardless of the owner’s political affiliation. The Authority reiterated that tax laws are applied uniformly to citizens and businesses based on its core values and mandate.

Mr. Nzala added that ZRA staff are bound by a strict code of conduct that enforces impartiality and professionalism. He outlined the Authority’s dispute resolution process, noting that taxpayers must first exhaust administrative remedies before appealing decisions.

He added that neither its Head Office nor the Commissioner General’s office has received any appeal from a political party to date.

TI-Z RAISES ALARM OVER CANDIDATE BRIBERY AND WITHDRAWALS AHEAD OF 2026 POLLS

By: Evelyn Ngoma

Transparency International Zambia has expressed concern over allegations that candidates are being bribed to withdraw their nominations ahead of the 2026 General Elections, saying the trend threatens electoral competition and voter choice.

Speaking in an interview with HYPE FM News, TI-Z Advocacy and Transparency Manager Bright Chizonde noted that some candidates were withdrawing to demonstrate support for their original political parties that did not adopt them. However, TI-Z reported that other candidates were allegedly being paid to step down, which it described as corruption and an offence.

Mr. Chizonde stated that a fair election process should be based on issues and feature competition, rather than have candidates go unopposed. The organization said withdrawals were leaving constituencies with few or single candidates, which undermines voter choice.

He linked the issue to Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 13, now Act No. 13, which bars new nominations after a withdrawal. Mr. Chizonde said that this gap is being abused and that the power of the electorate is being reduced when winners are declared without votes.

TI-Z has called on law enforcement agencies and the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter and arrest perpetrators. The organization stated that when candidates withdraw because they are bribed, it constitutes corruption.

The Adolescent and Young People Alliance Initiative (AYA) today held a strategic engagement meeting with Hype FM Managing Director, Sandy Chiluba, aimed at strengthening collaboration between youth-focused media and health programming in Zambia.

AYA Chief Operations Officer, Cosmas Ndumba, highlighted the critical role media plays in driving Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) among adolescents and young people (AYPs), particularly in promoting positive health-seeking behaviours and increasing access to Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV prevention services.

The meeting emphasized that media is not just a channel for sharing information, but a powerful tool for influencing action, strengthening service continuation, and encouraging adolescents and young people to utilize available health services such as HIV testing, PrEP, family planning, mental health support, and other youth-friendly services.

AYA and Hype FM further discussed the importance of using innovative, youth centered media platforms to amplify accurate health messaging, reduce stigma, and create engaging conversations that inspire informed decision making among young people.

Through partnerships with the media, AYA remains committed to building a healthier, informed, and empowered generation of adolescents and young people in Zambia.

MOPANI COPPER MINES COMMITS $81.879.65 TO STEM BODY 360 CATALYZER PROGRAM

By: Evelyn Ngoma

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) has committed $81,879.65 to its STEM Body 360 Catalyzer Program, a flagship initiative aimed at keeping girls in school and expanding their pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while addressing menstrual health challenges.

The program will cover 25 schools in Kitwe and Mufulira, targeting 10,000 girls in the communities of the two districts. MCM is also supporting women’s cooperatives engaged in the production of over 20,000 reusable sanitary pads to tackle menstrual poverty and create local economic opportunities.

Speaking at the launch earlier today, Mopani Chief Services Officer Oscar Matebele, speaking on behalf of MCM Chief Executive Officer Charles Sakanya, said the project seeks to bridge the gender gap in STEM-related fields by creating opportunities for girls to develop interest and confidence in science and innovation.

Mr. Matebele highlighted that one component of the program is menstrual hygiene, incorporated to ensure no girl child is denied the opportunity to acquire quality education, which is often hindered by menstrual poverty.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting education and community development through strategic partnerships that uplift learners and equip them with practical knowledge.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Access Centre (WEAC), the implementers of the STEM Body 360 Catalyzer Program, welcomed the initiative. Executive Director Nambula Kachumi said it was gratifying to see the program launched at a time when girls continue to face severe challenges in accessing education due to factors that hinder their effective participation.

Ms. Kachumi emphasized the need for stakeholders to build on Mopani’s gesture by addressing key social challenges, especially in menstrual hygiene and STEM education.

Zambia’s first woman civil engineer, Lucie Kasanga, who served as the guest of honor, urged the girl child to remain focused and take advantage of initiatives being rolled out to promote their wellbeing.

Meanwhile, Kitwe District Commissioner Oncemore Ngonomo reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring the initiative reaches its intended beneficiaries.
