MPS ACCUSED OF CROSSING FLOOR STILL SAFE – MUTTI
Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti has ruled that MPs accused of crossing the floor will continue serving in Parliament because there is no sufficient evidence proving they defected from their political parties.
Delivering her ruling, Ms. Mutti said allegations against lawmakers including Brian Mundubile, Stephen Kapyongo and Moses Moyo failed to meet the constitutional threshold under Article 72.
She explained that six MPs accused of joining the ruling United Party for National Development denied defecting, saying they had only expressed interest in joining the party.
Ms. Mutti also noted that some lawmakers linked to the Tonse Alliance and UPND did not respond to the Clerk’s office, making it difficult for Parliament to conclude that they had crossed the floor.
Meanwhile, she confirmed that Chanda Katotobwe has resigned as MP after accepting adoption as a presidential candidate for the Patriots for Economic Progress ahead of the August 13 general elections.
