BOOK DEDICATION

Dangerous Mistakes Pastors Commit is dedicated to the Late Terria Jere [1953 to 2020]. She was the Mother of Pastor Moses Phiri, the author of the book.

Why Her?

Like the women in Luke 8:1-4 who supported Jesus out of their own resources, Terria Jere was the strongest prayer and financial support system Pastor Moses had in his early years of Ministry.

Many times this woman of Integrity went out of her way to cover Pastor Moses's living expenses on the mission field.

She single handedly bought the Pastor the first car he ever owned as a Minister. This she did not because the Pastor was her biological son but because she was born again, Spirit filled and loved the Lord deeply.

The service she rendered through giving not only to Pastor Moses but other ministers of the gospel too was an expression of her love for souls and her desire to see the church of Jesus Christ established.

Her gesture made ministry a lot more easier and her generosity not only sustained Pastor Moses on the Mission field but gave him hope and helped him to serve God’s people with passion and integrity.

We can confidently say that Terria Jere, fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7) and she is resting in perfect peace in the bossom of the father.

And this Book stands today as a testimony of the seed she planted for the spread of the gospel and we recognize her effort and honor her posthumously for her relentless partnership in the Gospel.

May her Precious Soul Rest in Eternal Peace 🙏

Amen!

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER ONE - LIVING A LIFE TAGGED OR BORROWED SUCCESS

Don’t be Ignorant, You are not infallible!

Likewise, just because they are men of God, some pastors have gone to the extent of thinking that they are infallible and their tenure of office is for life because they associate their calling which is without repentance to an office entrusted to them by man. This is what makes them lazy to critically think about tomorrow and prepare for sad eventualities associated with their calling.

As a result of this mentality, some pastors believe that since no one can take the call of God away from them, they can never be offset from their job and this is what creates in them a false sense of everlasting job security. Pastors who think this way live in the moment and have no strong sense of the future.

Such men of God don’t think about death and dying neither do they think about the possibility of them being incapacitated by sickness, disease, tragic accident or indeed old age which could negatively impact their work of ministry and so they refuse to learn from the experiences of other men of God.

In spite of that, some pastors see no need to develop themselves and improve their credentials. They’re never in a hurry to acquire properties, assets or make strategic investments because they mistake a thriving congregation, community or social club for personal success and this is a grave mistake whose repercussions can only be felt when the minister is tired and ready to retire.

The calling just like a medical career maybe permanent but holding a pastoral office or having a job of a medical doctor is not. Pastors are not everlasting neither are they immortal men, they too can be fired, or retired on medical grounds or due to old age. They can also be retired or relieved of their duties on “church interest” just like some are released from their position in government on “National Interest.”

Unfortunately, this is the harsh reality some men of God seem to deliberately ignore. They live as though they will never be asked to step down and handover leadership to another capable and freshly anointed energetic minister. Some of them don’t even realize that one day their works will go down the drain of the memory lane into history books and every good thing they ever did will become a mere story that many won’t even be interested to hear.

Am I saying that pastors should stop putting their best effort in the work of ministry and concentrate on building their lives at the expense of serving God? No; not at all. God forbid that this should be the case. Am I implying that pastors should abandon community service and concentrate on plundering their congregations and lavishing themselves with good things? Definitely not!

What I am saying is that some pastors should learn to separate persona from the institution of the church. They should learn to differentiate between institutional goals and personal advancement. They should strive to strike a balance between serving God and living their lives.

Pastors should be willing to prioritize the ministry in a manner that allows them to score success and make personal progress. As a matter of fact, it is wrong for any pastor to put the needs of the church above those of his immediate family.

1 Timothy 5:8 (NKJV)
“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever”.

DANGEROUS MISTAKES PASTORS COMMIT: FOREWORD BY DR. PHILIP SMETHURST - CEO & PRESIDENT OF OVERLAND MISSIONS

I first met Pastor Moses and his dear wife Makola in Zambezi town of the Northwestern Provence of Zambia. I was ministering for the first time at the Palace of Chief Sankeni Ishima.

Moses and Makola were standing out side at the meeting place helping to administrate the meeting for the subjects of the Chief as he introduced our team to the region. At that time they were pastoring a church in not only one of the most economically depressed areas in the country but one of the hardest places to get to.

It was strikingly obvious to me that this was a man who doesn’t measure success by the usual means and who was not affected by the environment but had a capacity to reign over all circumstances. It was an unforgettable meeting. A meeting that later would open the whole region to us and create a friendship that would later cause us to play on the same team of which I’m am so grateful.

Evaluating yourself when you are in the office of a public minister in the modern era is often through the lens of short term success, which is measured in the number of followers and often uses comparison and competition as the judge of whether you are successful or not.

However, true success in ones ministry is found in the private arena of your life, where your true heart felt devotion to the King and His glory is found. It’s here where inner disciplines and loyalty to the causes of Christ are measured.

This book (Dangerous Mistakes Pastors Commit) is not about playing the “short game” of ministry but is a very clear and powerful instruction into winning the long game.

Moses has penned a masterpiece that has been birthed out of a life of devotion to Christ and His Kingdom.

ABOUT THIS BOOK - DANGEROUS MISTAKES PASTORS COMMIT

Dangerous Mistakes Pastors Commit is a Book that seeks to address critical matters relating to the morality and character of ministry in a more practical, precise and easy to understand manner. This book is not a researched material neither is it an academic manual rather it flows from a heart of love that seeks to warn and guide faith leaders who may not have committed certain mistakes which the author and other men of God who have gone ahead of them may have committed.

Given this, Pastor Moses outlines some of the most dangerous mistakes a minister can commit if they don’t uphold a good balance of life and ministry. He blatantly exposes hidden tight spots of ministry many pastor wouldn’t be so comfortable to publish openly yet some of these grave mistakes have made life miserable for many naïve and unsuspecting pastors on the mission field. It therefore wouldn’t be surprising if some consider this book a mere controversy or indeed an offensive attack on the integrity of the Pastoral Ministry in general.

However, this book was not written to slender, ridicule or maliciously expose sensitive information relating to pastoral work & ministry in general. Pastor Moses wrote this book because he wanted to share out of immense hands-on experience of what he found to be the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of ministerial practice spanning over 15 years of ministry as a full time pastor.

This masterpiece is a MUST HAVE & a MUST READ for all pastors, missionaries, worship leaders, church workers, as well as any believer who aspires for greatness and spiritual leadership in the body of Christ.

Among other great lessons you will find, this Book teaches pastors and church leaders on how they can:

• Avoid the mistake of living a life of tagged or borrowed success by prioritizing ministry in manner that allows them to score personal success and make family progress.

• Avoid living a pretentious life and provides practical steps on how to break the shell of pretense and live an authentic and peaceful life that glorifies God.

• Avoid pursuing ministry titles and entitlements over service and gives practical steps a minister can take to bring his insatiable appetite for riches under control.

• Avoid the temptation of neglecting the ministry of the Word and Prayer and highlights some of the dangers of being ‘prayerless’ and ‘wordless’ as a minister.

• Avoid taking ministry casually and the need to blend organizational and spiritual attributes for proper and effective management of the church.

• Avoid the consequences of tolerating the spirit of pride and arrogance with practical suggestions on how one can redeem himself and walk in humility.

• It also teaches single pastors how and why they should avoid using Marriage as a scapegoat in ministry.

This Book is indeed a MUST HAVE!!!
