Celebrating 120 Years of the Victoria Falls Bridge – 12th September 1905 – 2025
Today marks 120 years since the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge was officially opened on 12th September 1905. Spanning the mighty Zambezi River just below the thundering Victoria Falls, this engineering marvel is more than just steel and stone – it is a symbol of history, connection, and resilience.
Commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes and designed by Sir Ralph Freeman, the bridge was envisioned as part of the grand Cape-to-Cairo railway dream. Built in just 14 months, it stands as a testimony to human ingenuity and determination in an era when such a project seemed almost impossible.
For the people of Zambia, the bridge has been more than a crossing point. It has been a gateway for trade, travel, and cultural exchange – linking Zambia to Zimbabwe and the rest of Southern Africa. Generations of families, workers, and adventurers have crossed its span, making it not only a piece of infrastructure but also a vessel of memories and shared history.
Today, the Victoria Falls Bridge continues to inspire. It is a world-class attraction drawing visitors from across the globe, offering breathtaking views of the Falls and adrenaline-filled experiences such as bungee jumping and bridge swings. Beyond tourism, it remains a vital link in the region’s economy, facilitating transport and fostering cooperation between nations.
The legacy of the Victoria Falls Bridge is one of endurance and unity. For 120 years it has stood firm, a reminder that what was built with vision and courage can serve generations to come. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the men and women whose hard work brought it to life and we look forward to the next century of connection, heritage, and pride.
Happy 120th Anniversary to the Victoria Falls Bridge – a true monument of history and humanity. 🌍✨
