Referee killed after disputed foul in Chipangali football match!

A 55-year-old football referee has allegedly been beaten to death by players and supporters during a K5,000 Andrew Lubusha Football Tournament match in Chipangali District after reportedly failing to blow the whistle for a foul.

The incident occurred yesterday between 12:05 hours and 13:30 hours at Mchenga Primary School Ground in Chief Mafuta’s area during a replayed match between Mikango United and Leopard United.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba identified the deceased as Donald Tonga, 55, of Madalistso Farm in Chipangali District.

Mweemba said confusion erupted in the first half following a foul incident that angered players from Mikango United, who allegedly turned on the referee and assaulted him using fists, kicks, stones, sticks and a bamboo stick.

He said the referee attempted to flee but was chased by players and supporters who continued attacking him.

The victim sustained a deep cut to the left side of his head and was rushed to Chamasongo Clinic, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mweemba said the football tournament, sponsored by Andrew Lubusha, the Member of Parliament for Chipangali, had attracted 16 teams competing for a K5,000 prize.

He added that police officers who visited the clinic found the body lying in a pool of blood.

Police have since opened a docket and launched investigations into the matter. No arrests have been made, while a postmortem examination is yet to be conducted.

FAZ SETS RECORD STRAIGHT ON COACH HAUPTLE, FIFA SERIES VISA HITCHES

FAZ has moved to clear the air over issues surrounding Copper Queens coach Nora Häuptle and explained its position on salaries, contract terms and latest developments now before FIFA.

Speaking during a press conference at Football House on Wednesday, FAZ Head of Media and Communications Nkweto Tembwe said the new administration found a backlog of unpaid salaries amounting to five months when it took office.

Tembwe said FAZ engaged FIFA through a mediated process to resolve the dispute, which led to the coach withdrawing her complaint.

He said FAZ has since addressed another complaint involving two months’ pay, but discussions have now shifted to proposed changes in the coach’s contract.

Tembwe said Häuptle wants to reduce her salary by up to 50 percent so she can take up another job while remaining in charge of the national team.

Tembwe confirmed that the coach has asked to step away from her role as Technical Advisor to junior teams, a responsibility FAZ considers key to long-term development.

He said matters escalated on April 11 when Häuptle filed fresh claims with FIFA, including demands tied to future tournaments such as WAFCON and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Tembwe said FAZ has since begun preparing its legal response and will engage FIFA through the proper channels. He also raised concerns about the coach’s limited presence at local matches.

On the FIFA Series, Tembwe dismissed claims of poor planning, citing instead visa challenges involving foreign-based players.

He said FIFA advised FAZ to prepare a fallback squad of locally based players as delays persisted.

Tembwe said some senior players, including Martha Tembo, Lushomo Mweemba and Grace Chanda, later travelled via Zambia and joined the team in Brazil once visas were processed.

He maintained that preparations for WAFCON remain on course, citing recent participation in COSAFA and the FIFA Series friendlies.

ZAMBIA CRACKS DOWN: NO BAIL FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES

BY Phyllis S. Banda

Zambia has taken a bold and decisive step in the fight against gender-based violence, enacting a new law that makes all sexual offences non-bailable.

The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council NGOCC has welcomed the reform, describing it as a landmark victory for survivors and a critical shift in how the justice system responds to sexual violence.

Under the new law, offences such as r**e, defilement, and in**st will no longer qualify for bail a move expected to reduce cases of witness intimidation, evidence tampering, and withdrawn cases.

NGOCC Executive Director Anne Mbewe-Anamela said the development reflects years of sustained advocacy by civil society and sends a strong message that sexual violence is a serious crime and a violation of human rights.

She noted that women and girls continue to bear the brunt of these offences, warning that gender-based violence has reached alarming levels in the country.

The organisation says the law will strengthen prosecutions, protect survivors, and restore public confidence in the justice system.

However, NGOCC has urged the government to go further by introducing fast-track courts for GBV cases to ensure swift and effective delivery of justice.

Plough back to communities Kitwe mining firms urged

By Giant Reporter

Kitwe mayoral aspirant Colins Chansa has challenged government through the ministry of mines to take to task mining firms in Kitwe to plough back to communities they operate in.

In an interview Chansa says the district is home to some mining firms that are reaping million of dollars from the country's mineral resources.

He laments that mining companies in the district should be engaged in helping foster development by way of partnering with the Kitwe City council.

"The district is housing mining giants that should partner with communities to foster development and this should be done by them partnering with the local authority because we know they have budgets for corporate social responsibilities.

"Despite having mining companies in the district, the city has not improved ever since they started operating this is unfortunate. Am calling on different stakeholders to voice out so that they plough back to the communities,"he said.

Chansa said unlike how it was in the past, drainages and infrastructure such as for sports facilities are dilapidated which are suppose to be for recreational purposes.

He advised government to ensure that mines partner with the council so that they provide policy then mines implements the policies.

"This is a serious matter mines should engage with government so that they plough back in communities like in the past when we had communities benefiting from the mines.

"Let's have mining companies with a heart for the people, they should also engage people with disabilities to be brought on board otherwise it is a red flag,"he said.

NRFA Launches Mobile Money Payments at Toll Gates to Ease Traffic and Boost Convenience

The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has introduced mobile money payment options at toll gates across the country, offering motorists a faster and more convenient way to pay.

According to NRFA Public Relations Manager Alphonsius Hamachila, the new system will operate alongside existing payment methods such as E-Toll cards and cash, giving drivers greater flexibility when settling toll fees.

Hamachila said the initiative is expected to reduce congestion at toll points, improve traffic flow, and enhance the overall customer experience by providing quicker transaction options.

However, he clarified that the mobile money payment system will not be available at toll gates operated under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

NRFA Information Communication Technology (ICT) Manager Mumba Mubili noted that the move is part of the agency’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at modernising toll operations.

He added that adopting mobile money technology will help make payments more efficient and user-friendly, while also strengthening revenue collection for road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance across the national network.
