Epileptic Man Drowns in Well in Chipangali

Chipata, September 19, 2025 – A 23-year-old man has drowned in an open well at Chafumila Village, Chief Kapatamoyo, in Chipangali District.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Caleb Zimba, who was epileptic.

According to police, Zimba left his uncle, Richard Jere, at the village and went alone to his garden, located about two kilometers away. While watering his onion plants, he reportedly fell into the open well, which is approximately three meters deep.

Neighbours later discovered the body when they went to draw water and immediately informed the village headman. Police officers, working with fire brigade personnel, retrieved the body from the well.

Commissioner Mweemba said the body was inspected and showed no signs of physical injuries. No foul play is suspected, and the remains have since been released to relatives for burial.

Young Man Found Dead in Sinda After Marital Disputes

Sinda, September 19, 2025 – Police in Sinda District are investigating the sudden and unnatural death of a 23-year-old man who was discovered in a decomposed state in a field at Kasomekela Village, Chief Nyanje.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Owen Mwiinga, grandson-in-law to Justina Phiri, 65, of Mwase Village, who reported the matter.

According to police findings, Mwiinga had been experiencing longstanding marital problems with his wife, Christine Banda, 21, largely stemming from his inability to provide for the family. The couple married in 2023 and had moved between Lusaka, Chadiza and Sinda in search of stability.

On September 4, tensions escalated when his wife demanded that their marriage be formalized through the payment of a bride price. Disturbed by the confrontation, Mwiinga began heavy drinking and allegedly ingested a maize grain preservation pill.

He was admitted to Nyanje Hospital on September 5 but absconded the following day and later moved to Chadiza to stay with relatives. On September 13, he left Chadiza, claiming he was heading to Lusaka, but instead returned to Mwase Village.

His body was discovered on September 18 in a field, with vomit stains on his clothing, suggesting possible poisoning.

Commissioner Mweemba said both families have agreed to bury the deceased. Police have instructed that the grave be marked in case exhumation for further medical examination is required.

MLGRD Boosts Cash for Work Programme with New Waste Management Equipment

Lusaka, September 19, 2025 – The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has procured ten brand new tractors worth K14.8 million to strengthen solid waste management under the Cash for Work Programme in Lusaka.

The 75-horsepower four-wheel drive tractors, each fitted with 10-ton hydraulic self-tipping trailers, were received on behalf of the Ministry by Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Nicholas Phiri. He said the new equipment will be used alongside community labour to improve waste collection efficiency, reduce illegal dumping, and safeguard public health.

Mr. Phiri noted that Lusaka generates an estimated 1,200 tonnes of solid waste daily, but only 40 percent is formally collected. He added that the tractors will help bridge the gap while government pushes forward with the planned Material Resource Recovery and Waste-to-Energy Facility at Chunga Landfill, whose contract is expected to be awarded in the coming months.

The Ministry has pledged to continue equipping local authorities with the necessary resources to provide effective services, and has called on all stakeholders to support the programme.

South African hospital worker arrested with human placentas

A South African hospital cleaner has been arrested after being found in possession of a bag of human placentas in eastern Mpumalanga province, police say.

Rose Mnisi was allegedly seeking potential buyers for the human body tissue when she was picked up by security officers following a tip-off.

"Upon being approached by police, the woman was caught with human tissues.

The woman confirmed that she is a cleaner in the maternity ward," police said in a statement.

The 39-year-old woman appeared in court on Thursday, facing charges of illegal possession of human tissues.

The body parts were seized and sent for forensic analysis. She is yet to respond to the charges.

Police said the suspect was "hitchhiking" to the Nelspruit area when she was arrested by officers who were conducting routine patrols in the town of Lydenburg, also known as Mashishing.

She was carrying an unknown number of human placentas in a plastic bag when she was picked up, according to the police.

The woman was "charged accordingly", police said, adding that they could not rule out the possibility of additional charges as the investigation continues.

She is expected back in court next month for a bail application.

The police did not say what the placentas were allegedly going to be used for but some believe eating the body tissue can boost breast milk production and even prevent post-natal depression, although there is no scientific evidence.
