Mitete finally has electricity since independence

FOR the first time since independence, Mitete District in Western Province now has electricity after being connected to the national grid through a landmark Rural Electrification Authority (REA) project.

Western Province Minister Kapelwa Mbangweta, who toured the district yesterday, described the development as historic and a major milestone under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

“This is the first time Mitete has ever had electricity since independence and it has been achieved in the fourth year of President Hichilema’s first term,” Mbangweta said. “What is more, the project was completed ahead of schedule.”

According to REA, the Mitete grid extension was among its most technically challenging undertakings to date.

It included the construction of a 55-kilometre 33kV overhead line on concrete poles and required difficult river bank diversion works.

The minister explained that the electrification of Mitete is expected to open up new economic opportunities, improve service delivery, and uplift the lives of residents who have long lived without access to power.

He noted that the project is a direct result of the 2022 Western Province Expo.

“This development provides a clear answer to citizens who have asked what tangible benefits came from the 2022 Expo. Mitete’s electrification is one such project born out of that initiative,” he said.

The Mitete project is one of eight grid extension works completed by REA in Western Province at a total cost of K80.6 million.

Another major project includes the extension of electricity to Shimano Ward in Nkeyema Constituency, with further works lined up for other parts of the province.

UPDATE ON REHABILITATION WORKS OF THE LUSAKA-MONGU ROAD FROM TATEYOYO GATE-KATUNDA/LUKULU JUNCTION

The rehabilitation of the Lusaka-Mongu Road section from Tateyoyo Gate-Katunda/Lukulu Junction, Western Province has recorded a physical progress of 18.50%.

The current activities being undertaken by the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation in Joint venture with Chipangano Builders Limited include:

• Diversion construction: Ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow while core rehabilitation progresses;
• Clearing and grubbing: Removal of vegetation and debris to prepare clean working surfaces;
• Road widening and benching operations: Expanding carriageway capacity and sculpting terrain for structural integrity;
• Earthworks (Cut and Fill): Reshaping topography to achieve desired alignment and gradient;
• Roadbed preparation and improved subgrade: Stabilizing the foundation for long-term pavement performance;
• Cement-stabilized subbase course: Enhancing load distribution and pavement durability;
• Crushed stone base Course: Enhances overall pavement stiffness and bearing capacity;
• Rock fill in Dambo areas: Addressing poor soil conditions to ensure year -round accessibility; and
• Precast pipe and box culvert installation: Improving drainage infrastructure to mitigate flood risks and extend road life.

The M9 (Lusaka-Mongu Road) forms a critical link in the envisioned regional transportation corridor connecting Walvis Bay (Namibia) to Katanga Province (DR Congo) via Angola and Zambia.

Once completed, the route will drastically reduce freight costs and transit time for goods flowing between Atlantic Port cities and inland economies.

Enhanced mobility will benefit regional trade, tourism, and supply chain efficiency, especially for land linked Zambia and the Western corridor states.
