Levy Ngoma Challenges Church to Bold on Morality

Special Assistant to the President for Politics, Levy Ngoma, has challenged the church to be bold in its role of providing moral and spiritual direction to the nation.

Mr. Ngoma reiterated that President Hakainde Hichilema remains committed to upholding Zambia’s status as a Christian nation.

Speaking during a meeting with over 70 clergy members from the Mpulungu Pastors Fellowship last evening, Mr. Ngoma emphasized that Zambia will continue to embrace its Christian identity.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong and respectful relationship between the government and the church.

Meanwhile, Reverend Christopher Phiri called on the government to review the registration process for churches, noting that the fees are prohibitively high. He added that many churches are struggling with the burden of annual returns.

Reverend Paul Mwansa urged Zambians to take seriously the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation, while Reverend William Mwambazi appealed for government support toward the Mpulungu Pastors Fellowship cooperative.

*A Word of Caution to Lusaka City Council*

The Lusaka City Council must be reminded that public office is not a license for recklessness or poor judgment. The recent notice announcing the closure of several critical roads in Lusaka to accommodate a private marathon is both misplaced and counterproductive.

At a time when Lusaka residents are already grappling with unbearable congestion, lost business hours, and suffocating inefficiency in movement, the Council has chosen to further punish citizens in favor of an event that is neither national in character nor in any way essential to public service delivery.

*Why should private events override the daily struggles of ordinary Zambians and businesses that pay taxes and sustain the very Council that now treats them with such disdain?*

The Council ought to have shown wisdom by relocating such marathons to less congested zones, or at the very least creating alternative arrangements that balance recreation with economic activity. Instead, Lusaka is yet again held hostage by poor planning and misplaced priorities.

To worsen the insult, the Council cannot even spell correctly the very road names they claim to manage. *Roads such as Nationalist are reduced to “Nationlist,” Kabulonga to “Kabulong,” Kapwepwe to “Kapweepwe,” and Thabo Mbeki to “Thabo Mbiki.”* This is not just carelessness; it is symptomatic of institutional decay.

The Pretoria High Court in South Africa has adjourned proceedings for a few minutes as it awaits judgment. At this stage, both the applicant and the respondent have made their submissions on whether the High Court should allow the matter to proceed to the Supreme Court.
The family of the late former President Edgar Lungu argues that the lower court cannot serve as the final authority in this case. Meanwhile, the government maintains that the earlier judgment on the repatriation must be upheld.

Mafinga Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga, has refuted allegations linking President Hakainde Hichilema to the party's internal power struggles.

Mr. Chabinga also expressed dismay over the vicious attacks on the judiciary resulting from the prolonged legal battles surrounding the PF leadership.

Mr. Chabinga made these statements during a news conference in Mafinga Constituency, Muchinga Province.

He says the PF is a party of confusion stemming from 2014 after the death of Kate President Micheal Sata.

FORMER Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji, who was reported to be sick last week, has arrived at the Lusaka Magistrate's Court where a magistrate is scheduled to deliver his judgement.

Mr Malanji is jointly charged with former Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba on allegations of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime and willful failure to follow procedure.

Allegations are that between January 2020 and August 2021, Mr Yamba, then serving as Secretary to the Treasury, irregularly authorised the transfer of K108 million to the Zambian Mission in Turkey for real estate procurement.

Mr Malanji is solely accused of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime, among them a Bell 430 helicopter, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger, the Gibson Royal Hotel, and three houses in Silverest.

Zambia to Launch Biannual Injectable ARV in 2026

By Cindy Mulomba

The Ministry of Health is preparing to introduce a new injectable antiretroviral (ARV) drug that will require just two doses per year, marking a major step forward in improving treatment adherence among people living with HIV.

According to Dr. Chimika Phiri, HIV Prevention Lead at the Ministry, the new long-acting injectable could be rolled out as early as January 2026, with the initial phase targeting patients on third-line treatment regimens who currently rely on multiple daily tablets.

Dr. Phiri emphasized that this innovation reflects the government’s commitment to embracing new technologies and expanding treatment options. He noted that injectable ARVs offer greater privacy and discretion, helping individuals manage their health without fear of stigma.

Zambia has already introduced Cabotegravir, an injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) administered every two months, making it one of the first countries globally to roll out this prevention method outside of research settings2.

The upcoming biannual injectable ARV is expected to further strengthen Zambia’s efforts to achieve viral suppression, reduce pill fatigue, and enhance quality of life for patients.

PRESS STATEMENT

OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES – NGWERERE POLICE STATION

August 23,2025-Ngwerere Police Station, through Muwanjuni Police Post, recorded a case of Obtaining Money by False Pretences involving multiple victims who were swindled on the pretext of being enrolled into the Under-17 National Football Team.

The first report was received on August 21, 2025, at 13:20 hours from a male juvenile football player based in Mungule Chiefdom. He reported that on August 20, 2025, around 14:00 hours, while in Mungule area, he was contacted by a person who introduced himself as a football coach and claimed to be recruiting players for the Under-17 National Football Team. The suspect later arranged to meet the victim and demanded K2,250 for entry fees and facilitation of a passport. An initial payment of K1,300 was made with a balance to be paid later the same day.

Upon sharing the ordeal with a friend, it was discovered that other young players had previously fallen victim to the same scheme. The two later set up a meeting with the suspect, who was apprehended and handed over to police officers.

Subsequently, more victims have come forward to report similar fraudulent activities committed between October 2024 and August 2025. The amounts of money involved range from K2,250 to K5,000. So far, a total of eight victims have reported, and the cumulative amount of money obtained fraudulently is K22,650.00.

The suspect has been identified as M/Gift Mumba, aged 29, of Zani Muone East, who is a coach at Shakafuswa Football Academy. He has since been arrested and is detained in police custody as investigations continue.

The Zambia Police Service wishes to sternly warn members of the public, particularly youths aspiring to join national sports teams, against falling prey to such fraudulent schemes. Official recruitment into national teams is handled transparently through the relevant sports authorities and does not involve cash payments to individuals.

We further call on any other persons who may have been swindled in a similar manner to come forward and report to the nearest police station.

Chikondi Foundation President, Bishop John Mambo, has urged those close to the family of former President Edgar Lungu to persuade them to allow his burial in Zambia.

Bishop Mambo specifically cited Lusaka Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda, calling on him to engage the Lungu family and help ensure the late president is laid to rest in Zambia.

He emphasized that the church must rise and take a leading role in reconciling the family with the government.

Bishop Mambo stressed that the former Head of State should not be buried in a foreign land, as he was elected by the Zambian people to serve as the sixth Republican President.

Speaking to the media in Ndola, Bishop Mambo added that President Hakainde Hichilema should preside over the funeral of his predecessor and officially hand over the Zambian flag to the widow.

He further appealed to the church and traditional leaders to plead with the family to bring the late president’s remains back home, saying this would bring closure to both the family and the nation.
