BREAKING: Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu Dies at 68
Sixth Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has passed away this morning at the Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.
Chawama Member of Parliament and daughter to Mr Lungu, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa confirmed the development.
Lungu, who served as the country's head of state from 2015 to 2021, was also serving as Chairman of the opposition alliance, the TONSE Alliance, at the time of his passing.
Initial reports indicate that the former president was attended to at the Mediclinic Medforum for a scheduled check-up but later experienced sudden chest complications. Despite medical efforts, he could not be saved.
Sean Tembo, spokesperson of the TONSE Alliance, also confirmed the development, saying: "Unfortunately, we have lost the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman, and 6th Republican President, His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu."
Lungu, aged 68, was a central figure in Zambian politics for over a decade and played a prominent role in continuing Micheal Sata’s legacy of the Patriotic Front (PF) until they lost power to the United Party for National Development (UPND).
The nation awaits an official statement from the government and his family regarding funeral arrangements and national mourning protocols.
