NDC MOURNS HELLEN KAMUTUMBE AND COMMENDS SENIOR CHIEF MUSELI FOR CLOSING KISASA MARKET

24 March 2026

The killing of Hellen Kamutumbe in broad day light in Kalumbila at Kisasa market, while some people watched and laughed makes very sad reading. The horrific pictures of the murder have left us in tears.

The senseless killing of Mrs. Kamutumbe in Kisasa by the mob, fueled by misinformation and mob mentality, is a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked vigilantism. Our hearts go out to the victim's family and loved ones.

This tragic incident highlights the need for urgent action to address the root causes of such violence, including lack of trust in institutions and the spread of misinformation. We urge authorities to continue investigating and bring ALL perpetrators to justice swiftly.

Let us stand together against mob justice and promote a culture of peace, tolerance, and respect for human life.

When a country is in crisis, leadership matters. Leaders guide how societies co-exist and champion national values. As President of the NDC, I strongly condemn the barbaric attack on Hellen Kamutumbe in Kalumbila and pray for peace, healing and unity. Love and unity must be preconditions for community life; no one should die like Hellen did.

Hellen’s death is heartbreaking, frustrating, and it breaks the hearts of many women and men across Zambia. For this reason, we appreciate and highly commend His Royal Highness Senior Chief Museli's decision to close Kisasa Market. It is painful to imagine how all those people, young and old, just watched as an innocent woman was being brutally killed like that.

Young people must be encouraged to respect social values and to fear the law. When citizens take the law into their own hands, this is the result. Do not entertern false ideas about “stolen” body parts passed down as fact, pride dressed up as proof, and crowds that punish first and ask questions later. This is totally wrong and barbaric.

Senior Chief Musele has ordered the closure of Kisasa Market for 60 days following the mob killing.

The traditional leader said the closure will allow Police to conduct thorough investigations and apprehend all those involved.

He also banned all forms of trading at the market, citing lack of cooperation from the community during the ongoing probe.

Kalumbila Council Chairperson Shadreck Munjunga condemned the incident and urged Police to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.

A check by ZNBC News at Kisasa Market found traders vacating the premises in compliance with the directive issued by Senior Chief Musele.

NO OPERATION AT KISASA MARKET FOR 2 MONTHS - HRH SENIOR CHIEF MUSELI

HRH Senior Chief Museli Musokatanda has expressed disappointment and shock after the killing of a woman at Kisasa Market after "manhood" disappearing claims.

During the meeting today attended by thousands of Kisasa residents, the Chief questioned why such behavior is being seen and experienced in his chiefdom. " Why should such behaviors be happening here, they are killing the woman you are watching and supporting?". He asked.

"For this reason, I am giving sanctions effectively tomorrow, there will be no operation at Kisasa Market for two good months. In these two Months, we will ensure together with the local Authority and other stakeholders choose the committee that will be able to know its people trading in the market. We are going to do a screening to know who owns this shop, where they came from and who they are. We are keeping a lot of criminals around the Kisasa area, they are around here with us nowonder such strange things are happening in the area."

"Kisasa can't be a bad area, those people calling it bad are the ones who are bad, they came to settle here from different areas because they heard and found peace in Kisasa." He added

HRH further added that the death of the woman was caused by the late response by the Police. " We can't blame officers here, they don't have a vehicle, how would have they moved without a vehicle to qu**ky respond to such an incident?". "We are seeing Police CDF Landcruisers everywhere, where is the one for Kalumbila District? We want it here this week, I want to see it here".

During the same engagement, Kalumbila Town Council Chairperson Shadrick Mujunga also expressed shock on the incident " You can't kill a fellow human being like that, it's sad that even women were in front doing that to a fellow woman with stones and sticks I am saddened and I strongly condemn this behavior and will make sure all culprits are brought to book".

Kalumbila residents call for arrest of those who killed woman accused of witchcraft

RESIDENTS of Kalumbila district have condemned the killing of a woman who was accused of causing the disappearance of a 25 year old man's private parts, in Kisasa area.

The residents' representative, Bernard Chilayi, described the act as inhuman and criminal.

Chilayi told that it is unfortunate that members of the community took the law into their own hands instead of allowing the due process to prevail.

He said the killing was not only tragic but also a violation of the country’s legal and moral values and the residents hope the perpetrators feel the full wrath of the law.

"No individual or group of people has the right to administer justice outside the confines of the law. Acts of mob justice undermine the rule of law and threatens peace and unity in communities," he said.

Chilayi said Zambia is a christian nation guided by principles of love, justice and respect for human life, which should be upheld at all times.

He has further called for the arrest of all those involved, so that they can face the law.

Chilayi says the country is governed by laws which must be respected by all citizens regardless of the circumstances.

He added that the allegations of witchcraft cannot justify violence, as such claims are often difficult to prove.

"No one has the authority to determine or confirm whether another person is practicing witchcraft," Chilayi said.

We have taken note of the recent process within the Patriotic Front - Pamodzi Alliance which has culminated in the election of Hon. Makebi Zulu as Party President.

This important exercise attracted several distinguished contenders, including Hon. Chishimba Kambwili, Hon. Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, Hon. Eng. Chanda Katotobwe, Hon. Greyford Monde, and Hon. Given Lubinda, all of whom demonstrated commitment to the party and the democratic process.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Makebi Zulu on his well-deserved victory. We also commend and appreciate the other leaders who participated in this contest for their contribution to strengthening internal democracy.

We wish to convey special appreciation to Hon. Given Lubinda for his steady leadership and for holding the party together during a particularly challenging period.

GUEST ARTlCLE: Arrest all Kalumbila mobsters

Everyone who aided, abetted, encouraged, or participated in this crime in Kalumbila must be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The sanctity of human life is not negotiable. It is a foundational principle upon which any civilised society stands. When that principle is violated with such cruelty, the law must respond firmly and decisively.

What is particularly disturbing is that many of those reportedly at the forefront of this heinous act were young men and women, individuals who should be the custodians of our nation’s future, yet who instead allowed themselves to be consumed by violence and disregard for human life.

Such conduct cannot be normalised, excused, or overlooked.

The rule of law demands accountability for all those directly involved, as well as those who aided, abetted, or incited the commission of this offence. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done.

A society that fails to defend the sanctity of life risks eroding the very moral and legal foundations upon which it is built.
