🌸SMART goals framework 🌸
Purpose:
Help mentees clarify what they want, stay motivated, and track real progress with goals that are realistic
and meaningful.
1. S — Specific
What exactly do you want to achieve?
A goal should be clear and focused, not broad or vague.
Ask yourself:
●
●
●
●
What do I want to accomplish?
Why is this goal important to me?
Who is involved?
Where will this happen?
Example:
❌ “I want to improve my communication skills.
”
✅ “I want to improve my presentation skills by confidently delivering project updates to my team.
”
2. M — Measurable
How will you know you’ve succeeded?
You should be able to track progress and know when the goal is complete.
Ask yourself:
●
●
●
How much?
How many?
How will I measure progress?
Example:
❌ “Be more confident speaking.
”
✅ “Deliver at least 3 presentations and receive feedback scores of 4/5 or higher.
”
3. A — Achievable
Is this goal realistic given your current situation?
Goals should stretch you—but still be possible with effort and commitment.
Ask yourself:
●
●
●
Do I have the skills or resources needed?
If not, what support or learning is required?
Is this reasonable within my current responsibilities?
Example:
❌ “Become an expert public speaker in one month.
”
✅ “Complete a presentation skills course and practice weekly for one month.
”
4. R — Relevant
Does this goal align with your bigger picture?
The goal should connect to your personal growth, career goals, or values.
Ask yourself:
●
●
●
How does this goal support my long-term goals?
Why does this matter to me right now?
Is this the right time?
Example:
✅ “Improving presentations will help me perform better in meetings and prepare for leadership roles.
”
5. T — Time-Bound
When will you achieve this goal?
Deadlines create urgency and help prevent procrastination.
Ask yourself:
●
●
What is my deadline?
Are there milestones along the way?
Example:
❌ “Someday I’ll work on this.
”
✅ “By March 31, I will deliver three presentations and review feedback with my mentor.
