Milk Added to Zambia’s School Feeding Programme

Government has announced that milk will be added to the school feeding programme menu this year to improve the nutritional value of meals for learners.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Education Services, Kelvin Mambwe, said the government will partner with the private sector to supply milk to Early Childhood Centres. He explained that the milk component has been included in this year’s national budget allocation.

Dr. Mambwe made the remarks during the side-event on Public-Private Partnerships and Innovative Financing Mechanisms to enhance investment in school meals at the 11th Africa Day of School Feeding in Botswana.

He noted that Zambia’s school feeding programme has significantly boosted enrolment, attendance, and learning outcomes, encouraging the government to expand the initiative toward universal coverage so that no learner is left behind.

Dr. Mambwe added that government is strengthening data systems to track food production capacities and programme performance, emphasizing that reliable information supports better planning, monitoring, and documentation of progress by government and partners.

He further stated that the Ministry of Education is collaborating with key institutions, including the Office of the Vice President, to extend programmes to vulnerable communities.

Dr. Mambwe also pointed out that sustainable financing remains a major pillar, with plans underway to broaden engagement with innovative funding partners, including private sector institutions.

5,500 Teaching Jobs on the Way

The Teaching Service Commission is this year expected to recruit 5,500 teachers, subject to treasury and cabinet approval.

Commission Chairperson, Daphne Chimuka , says 5,500 the teachers to be recruited include 2000 teachers who should have been recruited last year and 3,500 allocated for 2026.

In an interview with ZNBC News, Ms. Chimuka explained that the commission was supposed to recruit 2,000 teachers in 2025, after Treasury Authority was granted in October, 2025 , pushing the process into 2026.

She further stated that the Ministry of Finance has allocated funds for the recruitment of 3,500 teachers this year but has not yet given Treasury authority.

Ms Chimuka said once approvals are done, the public will be informed.

ABOUT LEARNERS REPORTING TO SCHOOL ANY TIME THEY WANT.
Maintaining punctuality is a vital part of the learning process. For this reason, we respectfully urge the Ministry of Education Zambia to carefully reflect on the long-term effects of its recent directives.
We recently heard a statement on ZNBC by Clive Kalunga indicating that the Ministry has directed schools not to send back learners who arrive late, and instead to allow them to attend classes.
Indeed, every child has a constitutional right to education, and no one disputes that. However, discipline is equally essential in shaping responsible and productive citizens. Punctuality is not just about arriving on time it is about developing a sense of responsibility, respect for others, and commitment to one’s duties.
Teachers play a critical role not only in delivering academic content but also in instilling core values such as time management, accountability, respect, and self-discipline. Many of us are who we are today because educators took the time to correct us, guide us, and sometimes enforce rules that helped build our character.
While ensuring that no child is denied access to learning, we must also be careful not to weaken the authority of teachers in maintaining order and discipline in schools. A balanced approach is needed one that protects the right to education while still empowering teachers to cultivate discipline in a constructive and meaningful way.
Education goes beyond textbooks and examinations. It is about molding character, shaping attitudes, and preparing young people for the responsibilities of adulthood. Let us support policies that strengthen both access to education and the values that sustain our society.

ECZ rolls out facial recognition to prevent exam cheating

IN A first of its kind, Zambia’s national examination council will use facial recognition technology to verify candidates, ensuring that only the pupils who actually sit for exams can claim the results or write examinations.

The Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) said the system will link each learner’s face to their registration details and certificates.

This achievement falls under the 2026 new candidate registration system.

ECZ executive director Michael Chilala said this ensures results go to the rightful students and stops anyone from cheating by hiring a proxy.

Chilala said the facial recognition initiative is part of ECZ’s broader plan to modernise exams, protect data integrity, and restore public confidence in Zambia’s examination system.

“We will capture the face so that we can confirm authentication of the actual candidate. We want the face to eventually go to the register so that at the time of going in, the invigilators and supervisors can actually confirm that this is the person who registered,” he said.

“Most importantly, that face will go to the general certificate so that in case somebody hired someone to write for them, it is the hired person’s face which will end up appearing on the certificate and therefore they can’t use that certificate.”

Chilala said the new registration system is about making things better and protecting the integrity of exam data.

"By the time results are released, 99.99 percent will reflect the students who actually wrote the exams,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chilala clarified that the General Certificate of Education (GCE) will continue under the new system, even as the Junior Secondary School Examination and Junior Secondary External Examination have been abolished.
