Zambia, Tanzania seal deal on food security, defence cooperation
Zambia and Tanzania have deepened their long-standing ties after signing an implementation agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in agriculture, business and defence, with a strong focus on food production and food security.
The agreement was signed today in Arusha at the close of the 4th Session of the Tanzania–Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security.
Speaking after the signing, Acting Minister of Defence and Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu said the two countries have enjoyed historically close relations and remain committed to resolving issues through dialogue.
“Zambia and Tanzania have historically been close, and all issues affecting the two countries are always resolved through dialogue,” Mwiimbu said.
He added that the implementation agreement responds to the expectations of Hakainde Hichilema and Samia Hassan, who want tangible outcomes from the Joint Permanent Commission.
Under the agreement, the Zambia National Service and its Tanzanian counterpart will conduct exchange visits, share best practices and jointly work in agriculture and business to boost food production and national resilience.
Mwiimbu, who led the Zambian delegation, stressed that resolutions made during the Commission must translate into action.
“All the agreements and resolutions made during the Joint Permanent Commission must be fully implemented,” he said.
On the Tanzanian side, Minister of Defence Rhimo Nyansaho said the two nations stand to gain more by working together across multiple sectors.
“Zambia and Tanzania have a lot to achieve together, and Tanzania remains committed to continued collaboration in all sectors of the economy,” Nyansaho said, while wishing Zambia peace and prosperity, particularly ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Zambia by Mwiimbu and ZAF Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, who chaired the Defence Committee during the Joint Permanent Commission.
Tanzania was represented by Chief of the National Service Major General Rajab Mabele.
The Joint Permanent Commission also focused on capacity building in internal security and defence cooperation before, during and after Zambia’s upcoming general elections.
The meeting was also attended by senior officials drawn from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, and various security wings.
