“WE NEVER GAVE UP” — NZOVU WELCOMES MATALA GOLD SURVIVORS
May 29, 2026
NANGOMA – Nangoma aspiring Member of Parliament Eng. Collins Nzovu has described the rescue of the Matala Gold Mine accident survivors as a miracle, saying the successful operation demonstrated the power of unity, faith, and collective action.
Speaking when the survivors paid a courtesy call on him after being discharged from Mumbwa Hospital, Eng Nzovu said the incident brought together the people of Nangoma and the nation in a common effort to save lives.
He revealed that immediately after learning of the accident, he engaged President Hakainde Hichilema and the First Lady to help mobilize support for the rescue mission. He said government institutions, private companies, experts, and local volunteers quickly coordinated efforts and deployed equipment to assist in reaching the trapped miners.
Nzovu explained that experts had indicated there was hope for survival because the old mine contained ventilation tunnels and underground water sources. He said this information strengthened the determination of rescue teams and families to continue searching for the miners.
“We reached a point where many people thought there was no life left underground, but your friends continued digging. Your families never gave up on you,” Nzovu said.
He praised local volunteers, traditional leaders, and residents for their commitment and sacrifices during the operation, describing them as heroes who played a critical role in the successful rescue.
Meanwhile, survivor representative Justine Hamoonga thanked Nzovu for his support and encouragement throughout the ordeal, while Kelvin Mangwato, speaking on behalf of the parents, commended his leadership and compassion.
Mangwato also thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for supporting the rescue efforts and facilitating the provision of equipment used during the operation.
