STATEMENT: UN HAS NOT CONGRATULATED ANY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Lusaka, 14 August 2026 The United Nations in Zambia has dismissed claims circulating on social media that UN observers congratulated a presidential candidate following the 13 August 2026 elections.

The UN clarifies that it has no electoral observation mandate in Zambia and did not deploy any election observers for the polls.

“The United Nations does not observe national electoral processes unless mandated by the General Assembly or the Security Council... it does not pronounce itself on the validity of an electoral process or the legitimacy of electoral outcomes,” said Ms. Beatrice Mutali, UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia.

The UN condemns the unlawful use of UN emblems and urges the public and media to verify information through official UN channels.
It also calls on political leaders to uphold the peace pledge and for supporters to reject violence while awaiting results.

HICHILEMA: RECEIVING ENCOURAGING RESULTS SO FAR

President Hakainde Hichilema says he has continued to receive encouraging election results following yesterday’s voting.

In a Facebook post, the President said he has also received reports of peace, unity and solidarity across the country as votes come in.
“There is much in this moment to be grateful for. Let us remain peaceful, patient and patriotic as we await the official outcome from those entrusted with managing the vote,” he said.

UPND - Mulambo Haimbe added that early trends from tallying centres point to a strong result for the incumbent.
He noted high turnout in Southern, Western and North-Western Provinces, a favourable picture in Central Province, and gains for the President in Northern Province. Overall turnout is settling closer to the Zambian norm.

The party cautioned that these are early indications, not official results.
“Only the Electoral Commission of Zambia has the authority to declare the outcome of a presidential election. The UPND has declared nothing and will declare nothing,” Haimbe stated.

He also warned against unverified claims of victory circulating, saying they have “no source, no data and no methodology” and do Zambia a disservice.
UPND urged all parties to allow ECZ to complete its constitutional mandate of collation, verification and announcement without pressure.

Haimbe further noted: “Zambia has delivered a peaceful, orderly and well administered election, praised by observers.”

ECZ TO REVIEW SUSPENSION OF RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENT WITHIN 24 HOURS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it will review the suspension of counting and announcement of election results within 24 hours.

ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis announced the suspension took effect immediately nationwide due to reports of violence targeting poll staff and theft of marked ballot papers from ballot boxes in some areas.

The suspension is in accordance with Section 67(3) of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016.

Political Reactions:
UPND - Mulambo Haimbe welcomed the move and urged citizens to remain calm. He said ECZ has given a timeframe and called for patience. Haimbe also cautioned against unverified self-declarations of victory.

Tonse Pamodzi Alliance - Kasonde Mweenda & Celestine Mukandila were displeased. They argued ECZ should isolate affected areas and release the rest. Mukandila called on President Hakainde Hichilema to concede, claiming NRPUP’s Brian Mundubile had won. _“We are very confident, we have won these elections,”_ he said.

ECZ is yet to complete the nationwide counting and announcement of results from the August 13 General Elections.
