GOVERNMENT is disappointed with sprinter Muzala Samukonga's conduct of claiming he has not been paid his allowances when in actual fact he has received over K190,000 in allowances his participation at international events.

Samukonga has been on a social media crusade, short of calling Minister of Sport, Arts and Youth Elvis Nkandu and his Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe a liar, for claiming that some athletes were paid allowances.

His crusade received the backing of Copper Queens striker Racheal Kundananji, prompting the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) to stage a press conference this afternoon.

NSCZ general secretary Sombwa Musunsa has expressed disappointment at the athletes' conduct and behaviour of dragging government in the mud.

Musunsa said government attaches great importance to the welfare of athletes and cannot neglect sports men and women.

"For instance, we note with concern some unfortunate statements made in recent times by Muzala Samukonga, a 400m specialist who claims that certain payments have not been made by the Ministry.

"To the contrary, Muzala’s daily allowances have been paid for major international events including the just ended Paris Olympic Games. To show you the breakdown, Muzala was paid the following:

"K15,120 for his participation in the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius,
K12, 180 paid as per diem as part of his travel to the USA in 2022, K23,040 paid as daily allowance for the Commonwealth Games, K80,000 as winning bonus or for the bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"K30, 802 as daily allowance for the 2023 African Games held in Ghana, and
K53, 480 as daily allowance for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," he revealed.

He said In addition, when Muzala was injured in 2023, the Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts paid K173, 850 towards his medical bills.

He said that what has not been paid for is money for medals won at some competitions.

"We are aware that there are outstanding payments, and we are committed to ensure these are fully paid before the end of the year. To this end, the Ministry has engaged the Ministry of Finance to facilitate payments," Musunsa said.

He urged athletes to be patriotic more so that same even serve in the military.

"Furthermore, the Government of Zambia employed Muzala in the Zambia National Service where he continues to draw a monthly salary and enjoying other benefits.

"The Ministry also facilitated the donation of the house that Muzala occupies. After the Paris 2024 Olympics, the government engaged some well-wishers such as Chinese Association in Zambia and Kinglong who have pledged to contribute a sum of $25000 to the athlete.

"We should all show utmost levels of identity, patriotism and love for our dear Country even through sport. This is even more paramount for those in the service like some athletes who have been privileged to serve in the Military. Participation in international competitions is a privilege many do not have," Musunsa said

ZAF to recruit annually says General Barry!
The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander, Lt Gen Colin Barry says the Zambia Air Force will carry out annual recruitments to allow for more opportunities for members of the general public to answer the call to serve the Nation.

General Barry was speaking during the ZAF Livingstone Officers' Annual Ball which he attended as the Guest of Honour last night in the Tourist Capital.

The news of the recruitment was met by a loud applause from the well attended event which was the first ball open to the invited public guests since the Covid pandemic.

Officers in attendance were further delighted to hear that in order to achieve Command's intent of a combat capable Air force anchored on professionalism and accountability, personnel incentives such as notches would now automatically be upgraded annually.

He also said financial initiatives such as special advances and in house loan package conditions would be reviewed and improved to avoid personnel engaging loan sharks and other high interest facilities.

The Air Force Commander thanked the Air Power Ladies Patron, Mrs Sharmaine Barry, for the notable works the Club of dedicated members throughout all Air Force formations in the country were doing to contribute positively and give back to their communities. He went on to thank Air Power Ladies and all spouses for the support they gave their partners throughout the year.

The ZAF Commander called all ZAF personnel and the general public to deliberately make efforts to protect and improve the environment saying "it is the only home we have so we must take good care of it."

Lt Gen Barry took the opportunity to recognise Mr Benjamin Milenge, affectionately known by most as Uncle Ben, for his continued efforts of environmental advocacy and awareness.

" The Air Force will take its role in the fight to save the environment seriously and promise that the Air Force will further increase its efforts in reforestation and restoration of natural habitats planting trees throughout all formations," he added.

He was also pleased to announce that works to establish and commission an aviation museum at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Airport to celebrate the country's rich aviation history were underway and making progress.

Lt Gen Barry also recognized and thanked all the Air Force corporating partners for their continued love, support and respect for the ZAF and extended an olive branch for even deeper ties in order to achieve further partnership and lifetime results.

He acknowledged and thanked the Air Officer Commanding Training Command, Brig Gen Moono, the ZAF Livingstone Station Commander, Col Like Like, the President of the Mess Committe, Col Paul Besa and the entire ZAF Livingstone Executive Organising Committee for inviting him to be the Guest of Honour as well as hosting a successful Annual Ball.

Top 5 Reasons Why You Need a Social Media Manager

A dedicated social media manager is an essential part of your brand’s digital marketing strategy. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. The Social Landscape Is Always Changing
A social media manager can keep track of any algorithm changes and new trends within the platform, but also adapt your strategy and the content based on the latest updates.

2. Engagement in Social Media Is Necessary
An employee posting at random on your social media profiles, having no plan, will do a disservice to your brand.

If that’s your current state of being, I strongly advise that you go back to the drawing board.

Social media is not a set-it-and-forget-it tactic. In many ways, this approach can do greater harm than good. This is why engagement is so important.

3. Protect Your Reputation & Help Your Customers
Social media manager(s) are constantly on high alert to each message, review, and comment happening within social media regarding a brand.

Not only do they have the right process in place with regards to triaging, but also they’re aware of how to conduct themselves within the platform, representing the brand.

Hiring an individual who has a great deal of experience in this area is huge, as within seconds a social media manager can help mitigate and solve an issue that would have otherwise turned into a disaster if a less-seasoned individual would have put in the role.

4. Growing Your Audience
Think of your social media audience as your ambassadors, who would help share the benefits of using your brand’s products.

As your audience grows, the credibility of your brand grows.

Not only that but trust in your brand grows, too.

5. Reporting & Tracking
Having a manager who is in charge of all your social media efforts can help you improve your existing campaign.

But a social media manager can also keep your brand agile – switching objectives, creatives, or content if your current efforts aren’t doing as well as they could be.
