A MAN aged between 25 and 30-years-old on the Copperbelt has died after a canter he was travelling in lost control due to excessive speed and overturned.
The driver of the canter who is unknown is on the run, while nine passengers who among them is a two year old have been admitted in hospital.
17 others have been released from hospital as they only sustained slight injuries.
Copperbelt Province commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the fatal Road Traffic Accident occured on Monday around 14:00 hours along the Mpongwe-Machiya road.
He said involved was a Mitsubishi canter registration number ACH 9579 which had its front part extensively damaged and was being driven by unknown driver of unknown address who ran away after the accident.
“On board was Reuben Zimba aged between 25- 30 of Mikomfwa township, Luanshya who sustained a deep cut on the forehead and died upon arrival at Mpongwe Mission Hospital. The following sustained serious injuries, Joshua Mubanga aged six, Unknown female aged about 35 who had a cut on the ear and painful waist, Earnest Mwape aged 45 who sustained a deep cut on the forehead, fractured right leg and fractured left hand, Shekaina Mubanga aged three who sustained a deep cut on the head,” he said.
He said others are Matildah Kalela aged 47 of who had a cut on forehead and bruised left hand, James Mwewa aged 49 who had fractured left hand and painful shoulder, Matilda Malama aged sustained deep cut on the forehead, Rachel Mulenga two, who sustained a deep cut on the forehead and Nancy Kaoma aged 52.
Mr Mweemba said the above passengers have been admitted to Mpongwe Mission Hospital.
“The other 17 Passengers sustained slight injuries and were treated as out patients and have been discharged. The accident happened when the motor vehicle was moving from east to western direction, the driver lost control due to excessive speed and in the process the vehicle careered off the road and overturned,” he said.
