PEACE AND SECURITY KEY TO DEVELOPMENT — HAAMAUNDU

Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu says peace and security are critical foundations for advancing Zambia’s economic and social development agenda.

Speaking at the close of the three‑day Technical Experts Meeting of the Zambia-Zimbabwe Bi‑National Commission held at Sandy’s Creation Resort in Lusaka, Mr. Haamaundu said cooperation with neighbouring countries was vital in creating a stable environment for the Grow Zambia Agenda.

He noted that the elevation of relations from the Joint Permanent Commission to a Bi‑National Commission had created a broader framework for deepening cooperation on matters of mutual interest.

Mr. Haamaundu said the meeting had set the tone for future engagements aimed at strengthening peace and security in support of wider development objectives.

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY READY FOR 14TH PARLIAMENT SESSION.

Clerk of the National Assembly Loveness Mayaka says extensive preparations have been made for the First Session of the 14th Parliament, following reforms under the Constitution Amendment Act No. 13 of 2025.

She noted measures to support 280 MPs, including upgraded ICT systems, accessibility facilities, and enhanced sign language and Braille services to ensure inclusivity.

FUEL TANKERS HANDED OVER TO YOUTH COOPERATIVES

Government has commenced the phased handover of 100 fuel tankers from King Long Motors Zambia Limited to 100 youth cooperatives under the Fuel Tanker Empowerment Programme, benefiting about 12,000 youths.

Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the initiative will provide young people with productive assets to create businesses, employment and contribute to national growth. He explained that the Ministry settled outstanding balances with the supplier, enabling the handover in August 2026.

Mr. Chileshe said the first batch of 50 to 60 tankers has been released, with the remainder to follow once processes are completed. He urged cooperatives to protect the assets, manage businesses professionally and comply with regulations.

Beneficiaries welcomed the development, with Deinopark Youth Enterprises Secretary General Innocent Sunkutu assuring Government that the tankers will be managed prudently to generate income and jobs.

ZAMBIA AND JAPAN HOLD INAUGURAL POLICY DIALOGUE

Zambia and Japan have held their inaugural Policy Dialogue in Tokyo, marking a milestone in strengthening bilateral relations and establishing a platform for regular engagement.

The Zambian delegation was led by Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, while the Japanese side was led by Ambassador Misako Takahashi, Director‑General and Assistant Minister, African Affairs Department.

The consultations followed President Hakainde Hichilema’s 2025 visit to Japan, which established the dialogue mechanism and led to the signing of the Zambia-Japan Bilateral Investment Treaty that entered into force in July 2026.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, development financing and regional connectivity. Zambia will host the next session in Lusaka.

GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO CURB ILLEGAL RESOURCE EXPLOITATION

Government has assured Great Lakes member states of its commitment to address the illegal exploitation of natural resources.

Speaking during the 33rd meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) regional committee against illegal exploitation of natural resources in Lusaka, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta, who was represented by Director of Human Resource Anthony Chilenga, said member states must deepen cooperation as illicit minerals are regional in nature and require collaboration.
