Let me put this in a simple and straight way so you understand the shift.

Money lending in Zambia has been operating under the Money Lenders Act, Cap 398 of the Laws of Zambia. That is the system many people know. It was simple, easy to enter, and many people managed to start with it.

Under that old system, the process was very direct. Once you followed the steps, you could start lending without much pressure.

• Register your company with PACRA
• Get TPIN from ZRA
• Get police clearance
• Apply for a Money Lender’s Certificate from the court
• Show your business location
• Provide bank statements

That was enough to get you into the business. It was more about starting, not really about strong control.

Now here is the real shift.

The Banking and Financial Services Act, 2026 is coming in to replace that system. This means money lending is no longer standing on its own. It is now being pulled into the main financial system under the Bank Of Zambia.

This changes how the business is viewed and how it must be run.

In simple terms, you are no longer just a “money lender”. You are now treated as a financial service provider. That means the expectations are higher and the rules are tighter.

• From certificate to licence
• From simple setup to structured business
• From light control to strict supervision

This is a different level completely.

Going forward, the process will require more than just basic registration. You will need to be properly structured before you even start lending.

• Register your company properly
• Apply for a Financial Business Licence
• Meet capital requirements
• Set up proper governance and management
• Keep proper records and submit reports
• Follow customer protection rules
• Comply with financial regulations

This is no longer a business you enter casually.

The old system made it easy to start.
The new system will make it serious to survive.

If you understand this early, you prepare yourself.
If you ignore it, the system will move without you.

ECZ increases presidential nomination fees, pledges free and fair 2026 elections!

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has increased presidential nomination fees for candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro disclosed that the Commission has set nomination fees at K100,000 for male presidential aspirants and K90,000 for female candidates, an amount that has been agreed upon.

He, however, said the Commission will revert to stakeholders on the nomination fees for Members of Parliament, mayoral candidates, and councillors.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Diamond News, Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M'membe said it is unreasonable for the Commission to require candidates to pay nomination fees.

On the contrary, National Democratic Congress (NDC) President Saboi Imboela welcomed the new fees, saying the increase is minimal.

Meanwhile, ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the Commission will deliver a free, fair, and transparent 2026 general election.

Speaking during a meeting with over 50 presidential aspirants, Ms Zaloumis said the Commission will continue to provide timely information, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the discharge of its mandate.

Zambia goes to the polls on August 13, 2026.
