Livingstone – 17th July 2025
The Government has honoured the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) for its unwavering commitment to defending workers’ rights and dignity as the union celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Speaking during the Golden Jubilee celebrations held in Livingstone, Southern Province Minister Hon. Credo Nanjuwa applauded CSAWUZ for its enduring legacy in championing fair labour practices, advocating for decent working conditions, and fostering social dialogue.
Hon. Nanjuwa said that for five decades, CSAWUZ has stood as a pillar of strength for Zambia’s workforce—promoting justice, fairness, and respect in the workplace.
“The union has consistently aligned its efforts with international labour standards while promoting constructive dialogue among government, employers, and workers.”
The minister stated CSAWUZ’s instrumental role in shaping Zambia’s labour landscape through its advocacy for fair wages, improved working conditions, and the protection of workers' rights.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to decent work and inclusive economic growth.
The union was praised for strengthening labour rights and institutions in Zambia.
Government pledged continued collaboration to promote decent work and economic equity.
Hon. Nanjuwa also acknowledged emerging challenges in the modern labour environment, including globalisation, automation, and changing employment patterns.
He encouraged unions to remain proactive and equip their members for the evolving world of work.
“Let this union continue to be a guiding light—equipping workers with new skills, defending their rights, and amplifying their voices in an increasingly complex labour environment,” he said.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to social justice, he emphasized the importance of building a future anchored on inclusive growth, decent jobs, and resilient labour institutions.
“Workers are the heartbeat of our economy, and their welfare remains our priority,” said Hon. Nanjuwa.
Union President Joy Bene paid tribute to the founding members whose courage and foresight laid the foundation for the union’s half-century legacy.
He raised concern over the increasing fragmentation of the labour movement, cautioning against the formation of splinter unions driven by personal interests.
“Such divisions only weaken the collective voice of workers. We must remain united in our vision and purpose,” he said.
He further urged CSAWUZ members to embrace innovation, invest in continuous skills development, and engage the younger generation to prepare for future challenges in the labour market.
