INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP EMPOWERS NEWLY ELECTED TRADE UNION LEADERS IN ZAMBIA

8th September 2025

In a significant move towards empowering trade union leadership, the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) held an orientation workshop today in Kabwe for 160 newly elected affiliated leaders. The workshop, themed "Embracing Innovative Leadership Skills that Drive Transformation," aimed to equip union leaders with essential skills to address the challenges posed by rapid technological changes and a shifting political environment.

ZCTU President Mr. Blake Mulala and Solidarity Centre Executive Director Ms. Shwana Bader-Blau emphasized the necessity for innovative leadership during the workshop.

Mr. Mulala addressed ongoing issues of unions remaining in interim status for extended periods, encouraging leaders to adhere to their constitutions and conduct timely elections. He urged those facing challenges to seek support from the Secretary General's office.

"This gathering is an investment in the future of our trade unions," remarked Mr. Mulala, stressing the importance of equipping leaders to uphold the effectiveness and longevity of their organizations. His message resonated with participants as they explored key topics such as emotional intelligence, grievance management, and strategic leadership.

In her address, Ms. Bader-Blau highlighted the interconnectedness of worker struggles across the globe. "The struggle of a worker in Zambia is connected to the struggle of a worker in the United States... We are bound together," she stated, reinforcing the workshop's objectives of fostering dynamic and inclusive unions.

Ms Bader-Blau further advocated for the inclusion of youth and women in leadership roles while underscoring the significance of collective bargaining in protecting worker rights.

As the workshop concluded, both leaders expressed gratitude for the dedication of participants, acknowledging the role of continuous learning in shaping the future of the labour movement. This initiative marks a promising step towards equipping union leaders with the necessary tools to face contemporary challenges, while upholding the principles of democracy and solidarity within the workforce.

CANCER HOSPITAL TO BEGIN OPERATIONS EARLY 2026

Ndola- 8th September, 2025

By Mukuka Nawa

Copperbelt Provincial Health Office Principal infrastructure officer Joackim Longwe Says the Cancer diseases hospital under construction in Ndola is at 75% and is expected to be done by December this year and begin operations early next year.

Mr. Longwe adds that the hospital costing over K306,000,000 will have 60 beds and explains that some medical equipment is already in the country and some of it has been taken to the site awaiting installation.

"Medical equipment for cancer treatment, including linear accelerators and bract therapy, has arrived and is awaiting installation at a building project that is approximately 75% complete," he said.

"You know that medical equipment have already arrived in country. Some of these is already here on site awaiting installation once we finish with the the civil works. The building project is roughly around 75% complete now as we speak. And we are hoping we can clear the outstanding works between now and December," Mr. Longwe added.

Meanwhile, United Party for National Development-UPND media director Mark Simuuwe who toured the site says in championing the advancement of medical infrastructure, the construction of the cancer diseases hospital comes in handy, and resonates with the recruitment of health personnel where manpower is concerned.

Mr. Simuuwe added that government will continue to provide quality healthcare services to the citizens of the country through building of infrastructure and ensuring that essential medicine is available in health centers.

"The UPND government's plans involve critical health equipment, infrastructure creating jobs, and the deployment of newly recruited health workers. I should mention that the trajectory that the UPND government has taken is exactly going by the UPND plans. You may wish to know that the equipment that they are talking about are very critical in the advancement of a healthy nation," Mr Simuuwe said.

"And i should mention that this infrastructure has on the flip side of it-jobs because it will not be a white elephant. There will be people that will be working here.So the construction works resonates well with the idea of massive recruitment. So when we have over 18,000 recruited health workers, some of them will be deployed to this particular facility," he concluded.

A spirited youth from Siavonga, Susan Tembo, has expressed excitement and unwavering support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s (Bally) ongoing efforts to empower young people across the country.
