Police arrest ThatZed Podcast hosts

POLICE in Lusaka have arrested That Zed Podcast hosts Kalenga Chambatu and Elson Chigerwe over the interview they had with former intelligence boss Xavier Chungu.

The duo were detained in police custody on Thursday and has since been released on police bond, following the completion of the necessary investigative procedures.

On May 24, 2026, the hosts had Chungu as their guest who talked about confidential information, according to the police.

On May 28, 2026, police arrested Chungu who was later charged with revealing official secrets contrary to Section 4 of the State Security Act, Chapter 111 of the Laws of Zambia.

This act carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 15 years, which can extend up to a maximum of 25 years.

This particular section specifically targets the unauthorized communication of classified information.

The interview allegedly contained information deemed to be official.

Chungu has been charged with revealing official secrets under Zambia’s State Security Act.

Authorities have not yet issued a detailed public statement regarding the specific information in question or when the suspects are expected to appear in court.

If convicted, the offence carries a prison sentence ranging from 15 to 25 years.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said Chungu had access to the confidential information by virtue of his position as a person who held office under the government.

Police have since recorded a Warn and Caution Statement from Chungu for the offence of Communication of Certain Information Contrary to Section 4(1) of the State Security Act, Chapter 111 of the Laws of Zambia.

" The Police service will continue to provide updates to the public as investigations progress," Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said.

25 presidential aspirants pay nomination fees

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says 25 presidential aspirants have paid the nomination fees of K100, 000 as at April 30, 2026.

Speaking on Diamond TV this morning, the Commission's Principal Electoral Officer - Policy and Procedures Electoral Operations, Steve Nyondo, said that the commission is expecting the number to go up.

"It is possible that the the number will go up from the 25 that have already paid nomination fees because people have a constitutional right to participate in an election," he said.

He further advised all aspiring candidates to always attend stakeholders engagements organized by the commission so that they do not miss any information about the elections.

He also said that the nomination for Presidential aspirants are scheduled for May 18 to 21st, 2026, while nominations for aspiring members of parliament are scheduled for May 8, 2026.

He added that nominations for Mayors and Council Chairpersons are scheduled for May 19, while nominations for councilors have been scheduled for May 20 and 21.

" All those interested in participating in the elections should ensure that they are fully prepared and be available whenever ECZ calls for stakeholders engagements," Nyondo added.

Meanwhile, Nyondo has assured ECZ stakeholders of continued transparency and open dialogue.

He said that being transparent is one of the core values of the commission.

Nyondo said stakeholders have nothing to worry about as the commission would not do anything that is not in line with its values.

Government warns unlicensed money lenders

GOVERNMENT has warned individuals and companies operating money lending businesses without valid licences that they risk prosecution as such operations are illegal under the Laws of Zambia.

In a public notice issued through the Office of the secretary to the treasury, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning said all money lenders must comply with the provisions of the Money Lenders Act, Cap 398, which requires anyone conducting money lending business to obtain a licence.

The ministry urged those currently operating illegally to regularise their status without delay.

“This serves to remind individuals and companies conducting money lending business that they are required, under the Money Lenders Act, to acquire a money lending licence,” the notice read.

“Be warned that operating a money lending business without a valid licence is an offence under the Laws of Zambia.”

Authorities further directed both existing and prospective money lenders to apply for or renew their licences through the Office of the Accountant General under the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

The ministry outlined several requirements for obtaining a licence, including registration with the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) and a valid tax clearance certificate from the Zambia Revenue Authority, or a Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) for individuals.

Applicants are also required to obtain a police clearance certificate, with fingerprints needed for company directors, as well as a money lender’s certificate issued by a magistrate or subordinate court.

US continues search for missing crew member from downed jet as Iran offers reward for their capture

(BBC) US and Iranian forces are searching for a missing American crew member after a US warplane was shot down.

The missing airman, a weapon systems officer, was aboard a US F-15 fighter jet that was downed in southern Iran, CBS reports.

It's not known what has happened to the missing crew member - a pilot who was also on board has been rescued.

Iranian security forces are searching the region for the airman - officials in the country are urging citizens to find the crew member "alive" and are offering rewards for their capture, state media says.

Iran claims it has shot down a second US warplane over the Persian Gulf - US media says an A-10 Warthog was shot at during a search-and-rescue mission for the first downed aircraft.

The pilot of the Warthog reportedly ejected over the Gulf and has been rescued.
