Renegotiate compensation with mining polluters on the Copperbelt, CSOs demand

By Jane Chanda

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have demanded that the government should renegotiate the compensation agreements with mining polluters on the Copperbelt, and that this should be done with full involvement of affected communities.

The CSOs further demanded enforcement of immediate compliance audits, and initiate criminal and civil prosecutions where negligence or regulatory failure is established.

Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited and Rongxing Investment Limited recently agreed with the government to jointly compensate 507 farmers with K16.2 million due to pollution caused by their mining operations. The compensation is for damages to crops, livestock, and land caused by tailing dam leakages into the Mwambashi and Kafue Rivers in Chambishi.

But in a press statement, the Zambia Environmental Justice Coalition formally requested an urgent meeting with relevant government authorities to discuss immediate response measures, community involvement in remediation processes, and citizen-driven proposals for long-term environmental governance reforms.

Govt flouting the law over ZAMMSA DG appointment

The government has advertised for the appointment of a director general for the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), stating that the minister of Health is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced Zambians nationals to fill the vacant position, and that the same director general will report to the board.

The government announced in the advert dated June 20, 2025, that the director general would oversee the procurement, storage and distribution of quality and cost-effective medicines and medical supplies to all public health facilities in the country in order to ensure ease of access and facility reduction of the national disease burden.

However, we have a few questions for those in government to ponder on as they move along this dangerous path. Since they have advertised for the DG position, we want to find out who this director general they are hiring is going to be reporting to since he is supposed to report to the board. However, it is common knowledge to all that there has been no board for close to one year since the dissolution of the Anna Chifungula-led board. Why is the ministry directly hiring the director general when the ZAMMSA Act of 2019 clearly specifies that the board will hire the director general?

Here is what 14. (1) of the ZAMMSA Act of 2019 states: “The Board shall appoint, through a competitive and transparent process, a Director-General who shall be— (a) the chief executive officer of the Agency; and (b) responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Agency. (2) A person qualifies for appointment as Director-General if that person— (a) holds a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, which is accredited or recognised and validated by the Zambia Qualifications Authority; (b) holds a postgraduate degree in business management, public health, pharmacology, pharmacy, supply chain management or a related field, which is accredited or recognised and validated by the Zambia Qualifications Authority; (c) has at least five years’ experience working at a senior management level; (d) is of proven integrity; and (e) has not been convicted of an offence involving fraud or dishonesty. (3) The Director-General shall attend meetings of the Board and of a committee, and may address those meetings but shall not vote on any matter.”

Those in government, therefore owe it to the Zambian people to explain which law they are following in advertising for the appointment of the director general, since as far as the law is concerned, the only positions the minister is allowed to fill are at board level. It surely raises questions when people begin to flout clearly stipulated laws to fill in a vacancy, especially when some people who have held the position of director general in the agency have publicly complained about political interference in the management and procurement of services to favour those who are connected to the powerful in government.

We urge those in government to stop this lawlessness before they start crying 'persecution' when their time to account for the wrongdoing arrives.

LET LUNGU BE BURIED IN ZAMBIA – PF’S CHARITY
… I am sure HH has learnt from the hurt he inflicted on Lungu, family

Long time PF member Charity Banda says President Hakainde Hichilema has learnt a lesson from the hurt he inflicted on his predecessor Edgar Lungu so the late president’s family should, therefore, allow his mortal remains to be buried in Zambia.

In an interview with Daily Revelation yesterday, Banda, who was in South Africa to attend Lungu’s funeral and burial until the government of Zambia filed a last minute court injunction against the procession, urged the two parties to consider the nation’s bigger picture.

Banda, who was once appointed to serve as district commissioner in Kafue under the presidency of Lungu and also served as the then ruling party's Lusaka provincial chairlady, said she had been receiving calls from the party's grassroot members to find out if indeed Lungu was truly dead, saying that was something she found...

Leaders fail to denounce Freemasonry for fear of connections - Rev Mwambazi
.. as Mulenga says sons of disobedience are getting entrenched under the Presidency of a Church elder

By Chinoyi Chipulu

Lusaka based clergyman Reverend Walter Mwambazi says leaders fail to not rebuke Freemasonry gatherings for fear of losing offerings and connections.

And former Ndola pastor's fellowship chairperson Reverend Chilekwa Mulenga says it is concerning that questionable secret societies and sons of disobedience are getting entrenched openly in the country under the watch of a President who is a church elder.

In a write up to Daily Revelation yesterday, Rev Mwambazi, founder and CEO of Destiny Peak Pro, stated that in today’s sermons, blessings were equated with money, as opposed to intimacy with God because everyone was chasing for breakthroughs.

He said only a few people were chasing after true repentance, saying the biggest problem was a lukewarm Church and not Freemasons.

"‎Let’s reframe this. And I know this is going to offend many, but then

HH's legal team failing to provide sound guidance to him - Mukandila

By Jane Chanda

Tonse Alliance national youth chairperson Celestine Mukandila says President Hakainde Hichilema's legal team is failing to provide sound guidance, citing the Constitutional Court's ruling on Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7 of 2025.

Mukandila said the ruling reflected poorly on the President's legal team and suggested a failure on their part to provide sound legal guidance on such a critical

ZNS’s mealie-meal sales drop following reduced prices - Solochi

Zambia National Service (ZNS) commander General Maliti Solochi says with the drop in prices of mealie-meal recently effected by the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ), the service is not selling much of the commodity as it did before.

And Gen Solochi has said the Eagles mealie-meal brand would remain at a wholesale price of K220 for a 25 kg bag of breakfast and K190 for a 25 kg bag of roller meal because maize was bought at a price that allowed them to sell at the stated prices.

There has been speculation that ZNS has reduced the price of mealie following the decision by millers to reduce prices.

MAZ has reduced prices ranging from K50 to K130 across all brands.

In a interview yesterday, Solochi was asked to confirm if ZNS would reduce the price of mealie-meal in line with MAZ’s decision. He said ZNS was already offering competitive

KASEKO DISAGREES WITH KALUSHA APPOINTMENT

By Kalumiana Kalumiana
Football administrator Stanley Kaseko says Kalusha Bwalya's appointment as FAZ national team technical committee vice-chairperson was a populist decision and believes bestowing him with life membership ambassadorial status would have been a more befitting welcome back to the Zambian football family.

On Tuesday, FAZ officially announced the compositions of the 7 ad-hoc sub-committees that will play a consultative role in the respective structures of the game during Keith Mweemba's reign over the next 5 years at Football House.

In an interview with Revelation Sports in Kitwe, Kaseko said it is exciting to see the football family begin to reconcile but pragmatism should have prevailed over some decisions because a lot of underlining issues both past and present needed to be carefully

HH will breach constitution if he allows Lungu to be buried in SA - Mweetwa

By Mubanga Mubanga

Chief government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says President Hakainde Hichilema will breach the constitution if he allows former president Edgar Lungu to be buried outside the country.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Mweetwa said there was already a judgment in place in the Kaweche Kaunda case of 2021 which was instructive on how people who were occupying or occupied the office of the President of Zambia had to be buried.

“We want to indicate that, from a governmental point of view, the court action was taken out as a public policy, public interest matter which is in keeping with the people vs Secretary to the Cabinet, ex parte Kawache Kaunda case of 2021, which is a guiding law presently in Zambia,” Mweetwa said. “As to how a former President is supposed
