LION TERRORIZING SIAVONGA VILLAGES KILLED BY ZAWA

Siavonga

The Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has killed a lion that had been terrorizing several villages in Siavonga, bringing relief to residents who had been living in fear.

For days, the lion’s presence was reported across multiple communities, with villagers citing livestock losses and growing anxiety over possible human attacks. Local leaders had raised concerns, urging swift intervention to prevent further damage.

ZAWA officers moved in today and successfully eliminated the threat, assuring residents that the situation is now under control. The authority emphasized that the operation was necessary to protect both human lives and livelihoods.

Community members have since expressed relief, noting that the swift action has prevented a potentially dangerous escalation of human-wildlife conflict in the area.

4-Year-Old Girl Killed After Being Attacked and Mauled by Hyena in Lundazi District

By White Luhanga

A 4-year-and-3-month-old girl has died after being attacked and mauled by a hyena in Lundazi District of Eastern province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Veronica Kumwenda.

The incident occurred yesterday, September 1, 2025, between 18:00 hours and 18:30 hours at Chimeto Village in Chief Kaphichila's Chiefdom.

Brief facts are that the deceased was playing with other friends while her aunt was in the kitchen preparing supper.

While in the kitchen, the aunt suddenly heard the children screaming and crying that a hyena had taken away their friend while dragging her into the bush.

The aunt quickly rushed outside and heard the victim crying a few meters away.

She shouted for help, and together with other villagers, they chased behind the hyena as the voice of the child crying could be heard at a near distance in the bush.

Mr. Mweemba says after a few minutes, the child could not be heard crying, and as they continued with the search in the bush, they only found the hyena eating the child and managed to chase it away.

He says when they got near the scene, the child was already dead with some notable missing body parts, including the left leg with internal organs exposed, while the face was badly bruised due to dragging.

The remains were later taken to Lundazi District Hospital for certification, and due to the state of the body, the relatives have been advised to proceed with burial and mark the grave.

An escape from a predator
The animal stood trembling, its breath coming in ragged hitches, its entire world likely narrowed to the white-hot agony of that single, exposed leg.

Each minuscule shift in weight was a fresh torture, each breeze that brushed across the naked nerves an unforgivable violation. The skin, that essential barrier between self and world, was gone, leaving only unbearable vulnerability.
