Why Does The Litunga wear British Royal Attire?

Many wonder why the Litunga wears this British Royal Attire. Another question is why does the British Monarch send this particular attire to every Litunga? Some may suggest It's a way to keep a good relationship between Zambia and Britain. To a certain degree it is. It's a pretty interesting story actually.

In 1945 after serving in the second world war, Yeta III who was the Litunga at the time, was awarded the position of Commander of the order of the British empire by Queen Elizabeth. However he later abdicated the throne due to an illness. He was succeeded by his brother Mwananono Imwiko I. Unfortunately Imwiko died in 1948 and was later succeeded by his other brother, Mwanawina III who was bestowed the title of KBE ( Knight of the order of the British empire). He was born in 1888. He had been Knighted in 1959 for his service in the first world war and he was called and carried the title of Sir Mwanawina. He also served in the Great war as commander of Barotse Carriers in East African campaign from 1916-1918. He was also honored with Allied victory and British war medals. He also attended the Coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth the II at Westminster Abbey in London in 1953. He ruled Barotseland from 1948 to 1968. He also signed the Barotseland Agreement of 1964, which absorbed Barotseland into Northern Rhodesia, which paved the way for the creation of Zambia.

This is truly a spectacular Story as this not only helps to keep the bond between Zambia and Britain strong, but it plays a big role in the creation of Zambia.

The Mighty Zambezi River

The name of our country Zambia is derived from the Zambezi river. The Zambezi is the fourth longest river in Africa, after the Nile, Congo, and Niger Rivers. It is the longest east flowing river in Africa. It flows through six countries on its journey from its source in north-western Zambia to the Indian Ocean, an amazing 2 700 km. This river evokes mystery and excitement with few rivers in the world remaining as pristine or as little explored.

The source of the mighty Zambezi River lies at about 1 500 m (4 900ft) above sea level in the Mwinilunga District, very close to the border where Zambia, Angola and the Congo meet. From there it flows through Zambia, Angola, Namibia and Botswana then back along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe finally discharging into the Indian Ocean at its delta in Mozambique. The area of its catchment basin is 1 390 000 square km which is half that of the Nile.

This spectacular river flows West into Western province where it facilities the Kuomboka ceremony in the rain season, when it's flooded. This ceremony takes place every year. It is also provides fishing, irrigation of rice and fresh water for the locals. From there, it flows into Southern province and it gives life to the Victoria falls and the Kariba dam which is the largest man made lake in the world. This facilitates the production of hydroelectricity which is used countrywide. It also facilities the fishing of Kapenta ( sardines).

According to GlobalData, Zambia is the world's eighth-largest producer of copper, with output of 796kt in 2022, down by 0.56% on 2021. Over the five years to 2021, production from Zambia increased by a CAGR of 0.04% and is expected to rise by a CAGR of 0.29% between 2022 and 2026. However, Zambia’s annual Copper production has dropped by 5% to about 760,000 tons. This trend goes against the New Dawn Administrations target to rump up Copper production to over 3 million tons in 10 years. In addition, copper in Zambia is also used for the production of cables which are used for electricity countrywide.

Maize is the national staple food in Zambia, providing about 60% of the country's caloric requirements. This production comes mainly from small-scale farms and is almost entirely rain-fed. Southern Province and Eastern Province are the two primary breadbaskets of Zambia. Southern Province produces more than 600,000 metric tons of maize each year from a combination of commercial, which are unique to Southern Province, and smallholder farms. As a result, Zambia is able to feed itself and feed other countries such as Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and many more countries.

It is said that culture is the way of life of people in a given community or society. Zambia is home of 73 tribes consisting of 73 languages. All these tribes have different cultures and cultural beliefs. For instance, the Lozi, which is a particular Bantu speaking group in Zambia, believe that when a chief dies, people must make a village around the grave where they'll be staying together. They will often pay tribute and homage to the late chief. In addition, no potential Litunga can become a king without visiting Makono.
The following are some examples of chiefs, where they are buried/villages made there:
• Mbuywamwambwa- Makono
• Lubosi Lewanika- Nanikelako
• Ilute Yeta IV- Ndowana
• Mbikusita Lewanika II- Lishekandide

While some may suggest that this a strange practice, it is a rather unique and symbolic way of life. It is truly something intriguing and worth Knowing. It just shows how diverse culture really is. In addition, it is part of Zambia's history.

The Kuomboka ceremony is one of Zambia's biggest traditional ceremonies. Kuomboka is a Lozi word that means "getting out of the water" . It takes place every year during the rain season, when the upper Zambezi river is flooded. During this period, the Litunga who is the Lozi King moves from Lealui in the Barotse Floodplain of the Zambezi River to Limulunga which is on a higher ground. The return trip is usually held in August with a less publicized journey called the Kufuluhela. The Litunga sits in the Nalikwanda boat while he travels.

NIHMA (National Health Insurance Management Authority) is a compulsory National Health Insurance scheme that aims at providing for a sound and reliable healthcare financing for Zambian households and the entire health sector. NIHMA is important because it ensures equitable distribution of health facilities between rural and urban communities and it also ensures appropriate patronage of all levels of health care.
The following are some objectives of NIHMA:

(1) It aims at protecting families from financial hardships of huge medical bills.

(2) It aims at limiting the rise in the cost of health care services.

(3) It ensures the equitable distribution of health care costs among different income groups.

(4) It aims at maintaining high standards of health care delivery services within the Scheme.

(5)To ensure efficiency in health care services.

(6) It aims at improving and harnessing private sector participation in the provision of health care services.

(7)To ensure the availability of funds to the health sector for improved services.

(8)To ensure that every Zambian has access to good health care services.

NIHMA is a good initiative as it helps many Zambian people especially the vulnerable and the poor to access healthcare. The following are some of the benefits of having NIHMA:

a) Registration and Consultation – This helps to cover the costs related to Registration and
Consultation of patients.

b) Pharmaceutical Services and Blood products – it covers for the costs of medicines prescribed in Generic names, Blood products and medical consumables. It includes a
medicines list recommended from time to time to meet members evolving needs.

c) Investigations – It provides for the costs of Investigations, Imaging and other
Diagnostic tests as per the Investigation List in the benefits package.

d) Surgical Services – It covers for the cost of medical Procedures, Minor, Major and
Specialized surgical services listed in the benefit package.

e) Inpatient Care Services - This covers for the costs of daily patient admission, Intensive
Care Unit, High Dependency Unit Services for the daily admission costs depending on
the level of the facility and the agreed DRG bundled fee schedule which includes costs
of drugs, staff, lab investigations, medical consumables, catering, laundry, cleaning,
disinfection, admin costs and Capital maintenance of Buildings and equipment.

f) Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services - This is provided to inpatients and
outpatients where the facility has specialties for these services.

g) Spectacles - The NHIS also pays for visual corrective spectacles to the member once
every three years.

h) Dental and Oral health Services - It covers services for inpatients and outpatients
related to oral health. This includes dental conservation surgeries (Carries and dental
filling), gum diseases, dental extractions, and root canal treatment.

i) Medical/ Denture/Orthopedic Appliances – It is provided for supportive orthopedic
and medical appliances which are determined by the NHIMA from time to time.

The NHI model requires compliance and support from all stakeholders as NHI scheme will be a big game changer in the provision of both public and private services countrywide.
The accredited private health facilities will play an important role in the progressive realization of Government’s vision of Universal Health Coverage. It is recognized that Government alone will not be able respond to all the health needs of citizens and legal residents. Accreditation of private sector facilities by NHIMA will increase access and availability to insured services, provide members choice for service provision, would help to reduce waiting times and decongest government facilities. An added benefit would be that if NHI members are prescribed drugs or ordered to conduct investigations that are not available in an accredited government facility, the NHI members would be able to collect those drugs from an accredited private pharmacy and conduct the investigations at an accredited Laboratory or diagnostic center. Private Hospitals will complement the choice of facilities for members and help
decongest public facilities. Further Private providers will be able to rely on Zambia’s largest medical scheme to extend services to previously uninsured in Urban, peri urban and rural areas. The volumes of services provide a unique business opportunity for both public and private sector to expand their offerings to an ever-expanding membership base.
