PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says Government will support Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) to resolve its statutory debts, and also to convert its century-old analogue data into digital format.

He said what the UPNDled government has done to restructure Zambia's debt crisis can be replicated at ZNBC to attend to the corporation's statutory debts.

ZNBC owes National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) over K1 billion in employees' contributions, and Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) wants from the national broadcaster over K536 million in Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and over K596 million in Value Added Tax (VAT).

ZNBC has a total asset portfolio of more than K1.6 billion, while liabilities stand at over K2.9 billion.

ZNBC board members, led by their chairperson, Joseph Kazhila, paid a courtesy call on President Hichilema at State House yesterday.

MINISTER of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has disclosed that over 100 people have died in illegal mining incidents since 2023.

And Mr Mwiimbu has revealed that the UPND government has given out over 600 mining licences to artisanal miners in a bid to empower citizens.

Delivering a ministerial statement to National Assembly, Mr Mwiimbu cited the recent deaths of three illegal miners at Kikonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District, attributing their deaths to excessive bleeding from police gunshot wounds.

He explained that the miners' deaths occurred during clashes when police officers were removing over 50,000 people who had gathered at the site to illegally dig for gold. He said there were also other injuries among members of the crowd.

GOVERNMENT CONFIRMS MENINGITIS OUTBREAK IN MWENSE DISTRICT

The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed an outbreak of Pneumococcal Meningitis at Mwense Secondary School in Luapula Province, following the deaths of two 19-year-old male learners on 8th June and 3rd July 2025. The outbreak was preceded by a surge in learners presenting with flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, headache, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Laboratory tests conducted by the University Teaching Hospital and other national reference laboratories have confirmed Streptococcus pneumoniae as the bacteria causing the current outbreak. Additionally, Influenza A and B, as well as Klebsiella pneumoniae, have also been isolated.

To date, a total of 83 suspected cases have been recorded, with 5 confirmed, 2 deaths, and 16 discharges. 17 patients remain admitted, 9 in Mwense District Hospital and 8 in Mansa General Hospital. No deaths have occurred in the last 24 hours.

In response, the Ministry has taken the following actions:
• Deployed national response teams from ZNPHI and partner institutions.
• Established isolation centres at Mwense District Hospital and Mansa General Hospital.
• Conducted mass screening and intensified infection prevention measures at the school.
• Trained healthcare workers on early detection and management of meningitis.
• Engaged communities and stakeholders on prevention and control.

While vaccines exist for pneumococcal meningitis, the current strategy focuses on preventive antibiotic treatment rather than mass vaccination.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as fever, neck stiffness, confusion, or severe headache. Preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing masks when sick, and avoiding overcrowding are encouraged.

The Ministry calls on well-wishers to support efforts in improving ventilation, spacing, and water supply at the affected school.

This government remains committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of all citizens, and calls on the public to unite in raising awareness and kicking out meningitis from Zambia.

Dr. Elijah J. Muchima, MP
Minister of Health

ESNART Haabenga, a vision impaired senior citizen of Mutama village in Mang'unza ward was carried on the back by her grandson, Absalom Nyanga to cast her vote in today's by-election.

In an interview, the 89-year-old said she turned up to vote because she desires a borehole and a dam in her area to address the water challenges being experienced.

The Mang'unza seat fell vacant following the death of its independent councillor Chiyumu Miyoba in an accident in April, 2025.

THREE people have been arrested in connection with the beating to death and setting ablaze of an 80-year-old man who they suspected of practising witchcraft in Chikankata.

The murder happened in July 2022 and was reported by the victim's wife, Eve Chilekwa, 70.

Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka said the deceased, Alfred Moonga, had travelled to attend a burial and returned home to find a mob waiting for him, accusing him of bewitching the deceased woman.

"While he was still explaining this, a mob carrying a coffin approached his home. They pointed the coffin at him and began shouting that he was the witch responsible for Ms Mululuma’s death," Mr Daka said.

The mob beat Moonga with stones and sticks until he died and later set his body on fire. Initially, four suspects were arrested and charged with murder but were discharged on a nolle prosequi.

FORMER Deputy Minister of Finance Newton Ng'uni missed his chance to file candidacy papers for the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election due to a late arrival.

Mr Ng'uni, who was expected to run under New Congress Party (NCP), failed to arrive on time, prompting the party to nominate Brian K***a instead.

Party officials, led by Matero MP Miles Sampa and NCP leader Peter Chanda, arrived at the civic centre at 10:08 hours, but Ng'uni was not with them.

With the filing deadline looming at 11:00 hours, the party quickly arranged Mr K***a's adoption papers and fees, fielding him as their candidate for the August 7 by-election.

Despite not being the first choice for his party, Mr K***a described Mfuwe as his “personal project”, saying he felt indebted to the people.
