AS Zambia celebrates its Independence, two brave models took advantage of the fashion runway event organised by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development in Lusaka yesterday to amplify a message that Zambians are no longer slaves.

Masumba Ching’ambu and Mizinga Hamachila wowed the crowd as they stepped on the stage, clad in Chitenge, with a rope tied around Hamachila’s hands and legs, which Ching’ambu held onto, dragging her along.

As they approached the panel of judges, Ching’ambu freed Hamachila, symbolising the country's transition from a time of enslavement to independence.

Ching’ambu later told Daily Mail that “we are in a week of independence and we just want to show people that we are not slaves anymore. We are free now to express ourselves the way we want; we can do different businesses now.”

The event was graced by Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Elias Mubanga.

He said it is the service’s desire to re-align officers towards adding value to national development, especially in the agriculture sector and other projects.

A MAID of Chilenje Township has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for stabbing her employer’s eight-year-old daughter in the face with a knife.

Bathsheba Phiri, who is in her 20s, was charged with assault on a child, an offence which attracts a minimum mandatory sentence of five years imprisonment, in line with the Children’s Code Act.

Evidence is that on March 31 this year, the accused allegedly assaulted the child.

When Bathsheba first appeared before Lusaka magistrate Idah Phiri, she denied the allegation.

During trial yesterday, the court heard that the child was stabbed with a knife the house-help was using to cut vegetables.

This was after an attempt by the child to play with Ms Phiri who was uninterested.
