UN calls for release of political detainees in Zambia!

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Gina Romero, has called on the Zambian Government to release political detainees, respect fundamental freedoms and urgently restore democratic accountability.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ms. Romero has expressed grave concern over Zambia’s deteriorating democratic and human rights environment following the country's general election.

She has cited reports of widespread intimidation, the arrest of hundreds of opposition supporters, with some reportedly being detained for a prolonged time without formal charges.

The special rapporteur has also raised concerns over treason charges against senior opposition alliance leaders, which she has described as a dengerious precedence.

She has further made reference to reported voter intimidation, assaults and abductions as well as the escalation of violence and loss of life, including the death of a former cabinet minister and polling agent.

Ms. Romero says the developments point to a broader pattern of shrinking civic space, including the alleged arbitrary arrest of opposition leaders, parliamentarians, and civil society actors on disproportionate or legally ambiguous charges.

She further cited the de facto cancellation of RightsCon in Lusaka, along with reported arbitrary detentions and restrictions on peaceful assembly.

Ms. Romero has urged authorities to safeguard civic space, uphold democratic integrity and immediately cease the criminalisation of political dissent.n, assaults, abductions and politically linked violence that has resulted in deaths, including those of a former cabinet minister and a polling agent.

The Special Rapporteur says the developments point to a broader pattern of shrinking civic space.

🇿🇲 INAUGURATION LIVE | Heroes Stadium turns red as Hichilema’s second-term ceremony draws regional, global attention

National Heroes Stadium is filling rapidly this morning, with large sections of the terraces already awash in UPND red as Zambia prepares for the swearing-in of President-elect Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President-elect Mutale Nalumango.

The atmosphere is building by the minute. Supporters carrying party flags and wearing campaign regalia are taking up positions across the stadium, while security personnel and ceremony officials remain deployed around the arena ahead of the formal proceedings.

People have travelled from several parts of Zambia for the ceremony. The People’s Brief has received reports and images showing organised movement from North-Western Province, including supporters who booked UBZ buses for the journey to Lusaka.

The political colours are unmistakable, but today’s central event is constitutional. Hichilema and Nalumango will take their oaths following an election in which the President-elect secured 2,965,326 votes, defeating his closest challenger Brian Mundubile, who received 1,856,217.

The ceremony is also drawing regional leaders and international representatives to Lusaka, with further delegations expected as the morning progresses.

Botswana President Duma Boko has confirmed his attendance, while Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa is also expected at Heroes Stadium.

These are among several regional and international figures expected at the ceremony rather than an exhaustive guest list.

China is represented by Xian Hui, President Xi Jinping’s Special Envoy and Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Beijing formally announced her deployment to Lusaka last week.
