C H I L A N G A M U L I L O

" Tradition is a part of every culture and just like most cultures, tradition is passed on from generation to generation. For many Zambian tribes we celebrate the coming together of families through the communion of food.

I recently got to celebrate the love of my life’s Chilanga mulilo which translates to “showing the fire”. Chilanga mulilo is a marriage ceremony in which the brides family gets to showcase the various types of food that the groom should expect his future wife to prepare for their home. As a Lozi/Lunda family we prepared for him foods like shombo (cassava leaves), linembele, litu (black eyed peas), kateti and 7 days (a special Lozi beverage made from fermented milet meal).

It’s amazing how food is such an integral part of African traditions. These ceremonies play a key role in maintaining our heritage and ensuring our cultural identity doesn’t get lost in an ever evolving world " by Womba Mufundi
