LUSAKA PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ON WPFD.

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2026

Today, as we commemorate World Press Freedom Day under the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” we join the global community in reaffirming the vital role of a free, independent, and responsible press in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and amplifying the voices of the people.

On behalf of the Lusaka Press Club, I pay tribute to all journalists, media practitioners, and defenders of press freedom who continue to uphold the principles of truth, integrity, and public service, often under challenging circumstances.

A free press is not merely a privilege for journalists; it is a cornerstone of every democratic society. It empowers citizens with information, fosters transparency, and ensures that those in positions of authority remain accountable to the people they serve.

This year’s theme reminds us that press freedom is inseparable from the pursuit of peace, the protection of human rights, sustainable development, and national security. A society that safeguards media freedom creates space for dialogue, truth-telling, and informed decision-making—essential ingredients for lasting peace and progress.

As we mark this important day, we call for continued commitment to protecting media freedoms, ensuring the safety of journalists, and creating an environment where the media can operate without fear, intimidation, or censorship.

To our members and the wider media fraternity, your dedication to informing, educating, and shaping public discourse is invaluable. Let us continue to champion ethical journalism and defend the principles that make our profession a pillar of national development.

Together, let us shape a future where truth prevails, justice is upheld, and press freedom remains protected for generations to come.

Happy World Press Freedom Day.

Edward Roy Makayi,
President,
Lusaka Press Club.

STATEMENT BY LUSAKA PRESS CLUB PRESIDENT EDWARD MAKAYI ON JOURNALIST SAFETY AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

22nd April, 2026

Following the unfortunate incident on April 19th, 2026 in the Linda/Makeni area involving Power FM Editor Alphonso Kasongo, I wish to address the media fraternity and the public regarding the necessity of journalist safety and responsible reporting.

It is deeply regrettable that a member of our profession was subjected to inhumane treatment. However, as journalists, we must approach politically charged environments with extreme caution and wisdom.

While political violence against media professionals is a reality we face, we must also adhere to professional boundaries. Journalism is not a license to invade personal privacy. Our role is to inform, but we must exercise discernment; there are situations and locations where, for the sake of personal security, a journalist must know when to retreat.

We cannot reason with hostile groups, and persisting in volatile environments, especially after being warned—places our practitioners at unnecessary risk.

Furthermore, I wish to address the suggestion put forward by the Media Owners Association of Zambia (MOAZ) regarding the potential blacklisting of government and political party coverage. Such a move would be counterproductive and unfair to the journalists on the ground.

We must consider the realities of our industry; many media workers currently struggle with inadequate wages, lack of housing support, and insufficient operational funding. A boycott would not impact the government or political entities as much as it would cripple our own workforce, who rely on daily field assignments to sustain their livelihoods.

Journalists are not above the law, and while we continue to condemn the victimization of media personnel by political cadres, we must also ensure that our own conduct does not inadvertently fuel these confrontations.

As we approach the August 2026 elections, the Lusaka Press Club is committed to fostering a more secure environment for our members. We will be initiating urgent engagements with the Zambia Police Service, political party media directors, and leadership from various Press Clubs across the country.

Our objective is to establish clear modalities that ensure the safety of journalists and the creation of a serene, professional environment where the media can perform its duties without fear of intimidation or physical harm.

Edward Makayi
President, Lusaka Press Club.
