"ZAF OFFICERS' PICKS UP A LIFELESS BODY ON TUTA ROAD, LUAPULA PROVINCE"

By Jubilee Malambo.

Scores of villagers at Pa-Luse in Chief Chitambo's area were left speechless when two unidentified Zambia Air Force (ZAF) personnel, suspected to be military officers, made a stopover and assisted in retrieving the lifeless body of an unidentified man who was allegedly hit by the Nkeyema Council Chairman's driver along Tuta Road around 19:00 hours yesterday.

According to Joseph Chanda, a villager, after standing on the road for a long time and attempting to flag down vehicles for assistance, a ZAF truck stopped and carried the remains of the man before the driver returned to the incident scene.

Chanda narrated that the vehicle, a Hilux belonging to Nkeyema Council, was speeding down the pothole-ridden road when it tragically hit the unidentified man, who died on the spot. The driver, yet to be identified, hit and killed the man, leaving the lifeless body on the road out of fear of an irate mob.

However, Chanda said that after about an hour, two ZAF officers demonstrated exceptional humanity and assisted in picking up the body, showcasing their commitment to serving humanity despite their busy schedules. The officers' selfless actions were a beacon of hope amidst the tragic incident.

"We were surprised to see the officers stop and carry the remains of the person," Chanda said, expressing the villagers' gratitude. "Twalipapa sana ifwe ukumona ba ZAF baisa imanina nokwisa sana uyu umuntu" translates to "We were surprised to see officers when they stopped and carried the remains of the person."

The driver of the Nkeyema Council Chairman's vehicle later returned to the scene and was instructed to transport the body to the nearest police station and report the matter. The body of the deceased has been deposited at Serenje Mortuary, while the driver has been apprehended and placed in police custody pending further investigation.

Kudos to the two ZAF officers for their professionalism and humane response in this difficult situation. Their actions are a shining example of the Zambia Air Force's commitment to defending and supporting the country, not just in times of conflict but also in times of need.

The people of Luse village and beyond are grateful for the officers' selfless act, which has brought hope and reassurance of the Zambia Air Force's dedication to serving humanity. This story deserves the attention of senior command to recognize and appreciate the officers' actions.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 22, 2025

Fair compensation for journalism is a moral imperative

The Lusaka Press Club is compelled to respond to recent opinions expressed by Mr Oliver Kanene, a lecturer and board member of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, regarding the journalism profession. In his statement issued on Wednesday May 22, Mr Kanene made references to the state of the practice of journalism in Zambia. We note with concern the perpetuation of a narrative that journalists are somehow exempt from fair compensation due to the nature of their work being perceived as driven by ethics rather than professionalism.

This line of thinking has contributed significantly to the impoverished state of many journalists, who, despite dedicating their careers to amplifying the voices of others, including those in positions of power and influence, are left to struggle financially. It is striking that professions such as law and medicine are duly recognised for their expertise and compensated accordingly, yet journalists, who play a critical role in holding those in power accountable, are expected to subsist on meagre wages.

The reality is stark. Media organisations often label journalists as partners in development and the Fourth Estate, yet the disparity in treatment and compensation is glaring. While media owners and policymakers drive away in expensive cars after being covered by journalists, the latter are left to walk back to their newsrooms, often without fair remuneration for their work.

This is not an issue of ethics or self-regulation; it's a moral imperative. Media owners must recognise the value journalists bring to their organisations and to society at large. It's time for a change in narrative, where journalists are valued and compensated fairly for their work.

We call upon media owners in Zambia to prioritise paying their journalists reasonable wages, commensurate with their role in society and the value they bring to their organisations. Only then can they credibly advocate for self-regulation within the profession.

We also invite Mr Kanene to use his platform to advocate for fair compensation for journalists, rather than perpetuating narratives that undermine their professional worth. As a representative of the IBA, he should prioritise the welfare of journalists and recognise their critical role in Zambia's development.

The Lusaka Press Club demands a shift in how journalists are perceived and treated, we urge stakeholders like Mr Kanene to assist with the research what caused the Blarizo in Zambia that has affected the repute of the profession instead of blaming the symptoms. We urge the revist of the conversation to critical matters that caused what the results we are seeing and address those matters only then will we understand and help one another address the problem.

Lusaka Press Club will continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of all journalists in Zambia by inclusive participation of all stakeholders in addressing key issues in the 4th estate amicably, and we urge media owners to take immediate action to address this pressing issues.

ZAMBIA SIGNS JOINT VENTURE WITH INDIAN COMPANY START PRODUCING MEDICINES LOCALLY

The Government has signed a Joint Venture (JV) with one of Indian’s largest pharmaceutical companies, Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, to set up a manufacturing plant and start the production of about 150 drugs locally.

The deal was concluded on Thursday by a high-powered delegation led by Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet - Finance and Economic Development Dr. Siazongo Siakalenge which also included Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary – Legal, Ms. Mwenya Bwalya, and Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary – Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, among others.

Following the agreement, a groundbreaking ceremony to be officiated by President Hakainde Hichilema is earmarked for September this year while the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), which was represented by its Director General, Mr. Albert Halwampa, together with the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), which was represented by Acting Director General, Dr. John Kachimba, have been tasked to facilitate other processes including registration.

Speaking after the signing of the Joint Venture Agreement, Dr. Siakalenge said the Zambian Government was grateful to Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited for supporting its efforts of ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines in Zambia.

“Under this agreement, Akums will localize the production of drugs and medicines. Akums is world class and currently has 13 facilities supplying over 60 countries and employing over 15, 000 people. They are coming to Zambia to put up the 14th plant, the first of its kind outside India. Once that happens, Zambia will no longer be required to import drugs.

“According to the agreement that has been signed today, close to 150 different products will be produced in Zambia, making us almost self-sufficient in the acquisition of such drugs and medicines locally. We are looking forward to a day when Akums comes to Zambia to participate in the ground breaking ceremony within the month of September this year. That will be a great day for all of us. We have been engaged in the discussions with Akums in the last two years and today, all those negotiations have been successfully concluded,” Dr. Siakalenge said.

And Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited President – International Business, Mr. Ashok Saroha, said setting up the first pharmaceutical manufacturing plant outside India would be the first step towards turning his company into a global manufacturer.

Mr. Saroha said his company is ready to make Zambia self-reliant in all essential medicines and drugs.

“For us, this is a very special moment when we have concluded our discussions for setting up a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Zambia. This will be a special manufacturing facility because all of us have worked very hard in this direction to make this happen. It will be a special facility because it is going to be our first facility outside India. Since we started this discussion with you two years ago, our management has been looking towards moving out of India.

“We look forward to a date when we will land in Zambia and participate in this groundbreaking ceremony. We want to see such kinds of countries becoming self-reliant in terms of fulfilling their needs for essential medicines. This is beyond commerce,” Mr. Saroha said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lishimpi, who signed on behalf of the Zambian Government, said reaching an agreement on the Joint Venture was a big milestone and a game changer in the supply of medicines in Zambia.

“It is a big milestone for us and we are really grateful to Akums giving us this opportunity to change the scenario back home to make affordable, efficacious, and quality medicines available for our Zambians,” Dr. Lishimpi said.
