DEC ARRESTS FOUR MALAWIANS AND CEASES 112KG CANNABIS

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested four Malawian nationals and seized 112 kilogrammes of cannabis in Chipangali District of Eastern Province.

According to DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer Theresa Mawere, the suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation in Kapatamoyo Chiefdom after officers received information about a cannabis trading point operating in the area.

Ms. Mawere identified the suspects as Bester Phiri, 44, Zione Mwale, 33, Kennedy Samalani, 35, and Cheukani Redson, 32, all Malawian nationals. Preliminary investigations revealed that the cannabis was concealed in sack bags wrapped in chitenge materials in an attempt to avoid detection.

She said a total of 112 kilogrammes of cannabis was recovered and secured as evidence, while the suspects remain in lawful custody awaiting further legal processes.

Ms. Mawere noted that the seizure demonstrates DEC's commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing Zambia from being used as a transit or destination point for illicit drugs. She has since urged members of the public to continue providing credible information on suspected drug-related activities.

Mweemba Calls for End to Unprogressive Criticism of FAZ

By Maimbo Mweemba

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba has called for an end to what he described as unfolded and unprogressive criticism surrounding the association's operations and interpretation of its constitution.

Speaking when he featured on the Kenny T One on One Podcast, Mr Mweemba challenged individuals threatening to report FAZ to FIFA, saying they were free to do so if they believed any wrongdoing had occurred.

He accused some critics and sections of the media of misleading the public by claiming that recent Executive Committee (ExCo) meetings were unconstitutional.

Mr Mweemba, a lawyer and constitutional law expert, said such claims were based on a misunderstanding of the FAZ constitution.

He explained that Article 34 requires the Executive Committee to meet at least once every month, meaning the provision sets a minimum number of meetings rather than a limit.

He stressed that the ExCo can meet several times within the same month as long as the minimum requirement is met, adding that suggestions that FAZ violated its constitution by holding additional meetings are legally incorrect.

The FAZ president urged journalists and football stakeholders to carefully read and understand the constitution before making public statements.

Mr Mweemba said inaccurate interpretations risk misleading football fans and creating unnecessary divisions within the game.

UPND ROMA YOUTHS CALLS GREATER PARTICIPATION IN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES

By Maimbo Mweemba

The United Party for National Development (UPND) in Roma Constituency has urged young people to take advantage of government empowerment programmes and reject political violence ahead of the August elections.

Speaking on Power FM's Voice of the People, UPND Roma Constituency Vice Youth Chairperson for Politics, Elliott Mwakandolo, said many people still wrongly believe they need political connections to access government programmes such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Mr. Mwakandolo said CDF and other empowerment initiatives are national programmes open to all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

He noted that the misconception stems from past experiences where access to opportunities was perceived to depend on party connections.

He said youth leaders in Roma Constituency are actively engaging young people and providing information on government programmes and parliamentary activities to ensure they remain informed and involved.

Mr. Mwakandolo further said the UPND Youth Wing promotes accountability through dialogue with party leaders and uses established channels to raise concerns affecting young people.

He stressed that the party does not tolerate violence and is committed to raising a generation of youths who engage in issue-based politics through debate and constructive ideas rather than intimidation and conflict.

Mr. Mwakandolo encouraged young people to peacefully mobilise support for policies they believe in and remain calm even when provoked during the election period.
