MORGAN MUUNDA SAYS 75,000 STUDENTS READY TO BACK HICHILEMA FOR SECOND TERM

LUSAKA – UPND campaign official Hon. Morgan Muunda says more than 75,000 students from colleges and universities have expressed their intention to support President Hakainde Hichilema in the August 13, 2026 general elections.
Muunda said the students have also committed themselves to mobilising additional voters in support of President Hichilema, with each participant being encouraged to reach out to at least 20 friends and fellow young people ahead of polling day.
According to Muunda, the students' support is largely based on what they describe as improvements in education, social protection and youth empowerment under the UPND administration.
He pointed to the continuation of free education, increased support for students through the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships system, student meal allowances and the expansion of social protection programmes as some of the policies that have influenced the students' position.
Muunda said the young people believe that these programmes represent an investment in their future and should therefore be protected through continued support for the current administration.
He further said the students are confident that President Hichilema can deliver on the target of five million votes being mobilised for his presidential campaign.
STUDENTS URGED TO MOBILISE
Muunda urged the students to take their message beyond campuses and engage their families, friends and communities peacefully.
He encouraged each student who supports the President to identify other eligible voters and persuade them through lawful and peaceful engagement to participate in the electoral process.
“We have a responsibility to explain what has changed in education and youth empowerment and why these gains must be protected,” Muunda said.
He said the students' mobilisation effort is not only about voting but also about encouraging young people to participate actively in Zambia's democratic process.
FOCUS ON EDUCATION AND SOCIAL PROTECTION
Muunda contrasted the current government's education and social-protection policies with what he described as the challenges experienced by ordinary Zambians under the previous administration.
He argued that the expansion of social protection and education support demonstrates a different approach to public resource allocation, with greater emphasis on programmes intended to benefit ordinary citizens.
He also said students should consider the availability of education financing and other forms of youth empowerment when deciding which leadership they want to support.
“Students have seen the difference in their own lives. They have access to opportunities that can help them complete their education and build their future,” he said.
Muunda further appealed to young people not to allow political differences to divide them, urging them to campaign peacefully and respect the choices of other citizens.
A CALL FOR CONTINUITY
Muunda said President Hichilema deserves a second term to consolidate programmes already introduced by the UPND administration.
He urged the students and other young people to turn out on August 13 and exercise their democratic right.
The mobilisation drive, he said, will continue through colleges, universities, communities and youth networks as the campaign enters its final days.
Muunda said the objective is to ensure that young people understand the issues at stake and make an informed choice at the ballot box.
