ANOTHER MAN IN MANYINGA CREATES A MINI HYDRO POWER STATION

Not so long ago Manyinga District in North-Western Province made headlines when the Rural Electrical Authority (REA) toured a Mini Hydro Power Station made by a local youth Abel Mibanga.

It appears that Manyinga is the home of many innovative minds, with the latest one being Mr Edward Samondela who has constructed a Mini Hydro Power Station. Mr Samondela aged 45 is a local farmer based in Kasamba area of Manyinga who is able to generate electricity from the Kasamba stream to light up his household, farm and the surrounding community.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is that most of the material he used to make the Mini Hydro Power Station was just scrap material which he put together and modified in order to meet the specifications of his project.

The idea for this project was sparked by Mr Samondela's need for electricity to enable him to run his farming projects, specifically his poultry farming. The availability of electricity makes farming much more effective.

This Mini Hydro power project is having a positive impact on the local community, and so Mr Samondela has appealed to government and other well wishers to come on board to assist him improve his project so that many others can benefit from it.

Mr. Edward Samondela's Mini Hydro Power Station stands as a shining example of how important it is to be innovative when one wants their needs met. It is a reminder of the incredible things that can be achieved at a local level when resourcefulness meets determination.

This local hero's work should be an inspiration to many of us to be innovative and make use of the resources we have around us.

“WHEN I USED TO SELL CHIKANDA, MY FORMER SCHOOL MATES USED TO LAUGH AT ME BUT TODAY I OWN A HOUSE AND A TRUCK”

MY name is Chipo Muyovwe.
I am 22 years old and I live in the 10 miles area outside Lusaka City.

I grew up in Lusaka's Kamwala area. I used to live with my parents , Darlington Muyovwe, a Businessman and Caroline Zulu Muyovwe, a house wife.

My parents died in 2011 and 2014 respectively , and this changed my welfare. I started facing financial challenges.
I then moved to live with my uncle in Chilenje 's Mapoloto Area.

My uncle, a poor security guard could not afford to send me to school due to financial challenges so I had to quit school in grade 10.

After life became tough, I started working for a neighbour who used to make Chikanda.
Every morning I would go to her house to collect Chikanda which I would sell in pubs and trading places such as Katungu and Chris corner in Chilenje.
At the end of the day I would be given a commission which I would deposit in my Airtel Mobile Money Account.

On Saturday mornings, I would go round washing beddings for students at Evelyn Hone College and in the afternoon I would go to sell Chikanda.

After I raised K1500, I gave it to Matilda Mumba, a church mate and an inter border trader to buy jewelry, handbags and nail polish for me from South Africa. I then sold them to female students at Evelyn Hone College and at Church.
After I sold these products, I made K3500. I again gave the K3500 to Matilda to buy more products for me from South Africa, and that was how my business grew.

I saved enough money to buy traditional land at 10 miles where I built a chicken run a year later.
I continued with my business and when I had raised K10,000, I bought point of lay chickens and that was how I started my egg production business.
I started with 500 layers and today I have thousands of chicken layers.
Apart from egg production business I am also doing farming.

My advice to all the young people who are facing challenges in life is that never give up.
When I was going round in the streets to sell Chikanda, my former school mates from Kabulonga Girls school used to laugh at me. But I had an ambition to become big.

Today I own a house , a truck and I am also paying schools fees for a lot of people in my community.

6 MISTAKES FARMERS MAKE WHEN PLANTING POTATOES

Potatoes are one of the world’s most widely consumed and versatile crops, making them a staple in many households. As a result, potato farming is a significant agricultural endeavor. However, even experienced farmers can make mistakes when planting potatoes, which can lead to reduced yields and quality. In this article, we will explore six common mistakes farmers make when planting potatoes and how to avoid them.

Poor Soil Preparation:

One of the most critical factors in potato cultivation is soil preparation. Potatoes thrive in loose, well-draining soil with good aeration. Farmers often make the mistake of not adequately preparing their soil before planting. This can lead to compacted soil, poor drainage, and reduced root development. To avoid this, invest time in loosening the soil, adding organic matter, and conducting soil tests to ensure the right pH levels and nutrient content.

Planting at the Wrong Depth:

Planting potatoes at the incorrect depth is another common error. Planting too shallow can result in potatoes being exposed to sunlight, causing them to turn green and develop toxic compounds. On the other hand, planting too deep can lead to delayed emergence and reduced yields. Aim to plant potatoes at a depth of 3-4 inches, with eyes facing upwards, for optimal results.

Overcrowding:

Overcrowding potato plants is a mistake that can significantly impact yield. Planting potatoes too closely together can lead to competition for resources like water and nutrients. This can result in smaller tubers and a lower overall yield. Follow spacing https://kulimanews.com/6-mistakes-farmers-make-when-planting-potatoes/

I MADE K144,000 FROM 4 HECTORES OF MAIZE: FARMER LUNGU

In a remarkable display of dedication, perseverance, and expert farming techniques, Zambian farmer Maps Lungu has achieved a stunning harvest of 340 bags of white maize from his rain-fed fields this year. Mr. Lungu’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how effective risk management and a wealth of experience can lead to agricultural success.

Mr. Lungu, who has been in the farming industry for more than 13 years, understands the unpredictable nature of rain-fed farming all too well. To mitigate risks associated with erratic rainfall, he adopted a two-stage planting strategy that has now paid off handsomely.

The diligent farmer initiated his planting on November 12, extending it through December 15, thus spreading his risk across two critical time periods. Mr. Lungu utilized 100kg of seed in total, with 50kg of seed-co 719 sown in the first stage on Field 1 and an additional 50kg of DK maize in the second stage on Field 2, covering a total of 4 hectares.

To ensure optimal crop growth and yield, Mr. Lungu employed a calculated fertilizer regimen. He used 15 bags of D compound and 12 bags of urea, amounting to a total of 27 bags of fertilizer. Additionally, he applied 10 liters of Kolopa w**d killer to keep his fields free from unwanted vegetation.

Labor was also a crucial factor in Mr. Lungu’s farming success. He enlisted the help of four dedicated workers who supported him throughout the entire project, from planting to harvest.

Mr. Lungu’s meticulous approach and relentless efforts bore fruit as he managed to harvest an impressive 28,900 kilograms of maize, which he meticulously stored in tiger feed bags. This abundant harvest translated into revenue amounting to K144,500. READ MORE ...
