SUBMISSION OF FUEL TANKER TRUCKS FOR STATUTORY VERIFICATIONS
The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has noted with concern that some fuel transporters are operating tanker trucks without valid Certificates of Verification.
The practice is a violation of the Metrology Act No.6 of 2017 Section 25 (2) (c) ‘…which states that the responsible person shall before placing a measuring instrument covered by the Act into service ensure it is calibrated and verified in accordance to regulations’.
The operation of fuel transporters without a valid certificate of verification for their tanker trucks poses a risk to the accuracy and integrity of fuel measurements in the sector resulting to risks of unfair trade practices and compromises safety.
In this regard, the Agency hereby directs all operators of tanker trucks to ensure that their tanker trucks are submitted for verification without delay.
Furthermore, all stakeholders in the petroleum sector are reminded tanker truck without a valid Certificate of Verification should NOT be allowed to load or offload fuel.
Failure to comply with this directive will result to sanctions and penalties as prescribed under the Metrology laws.
Additionally, the Agency will be intensifying compliance monitoring inspections to ensure adherence to these requirements.
For any clarifications and guidance all stakeholders are free to contact the Zambia Metrology Agency.
ZMA operates under the statutory body created by the Metrology Act No. 6 of 2017 and operates under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (MCTI). The Agency is entrusted with the designation, maintenance, and safeguarding of national measurement standards. It also undertakes the certification and calibration of measuring instruments used in commercial transactions, law enforcement, health, safety, environmental management, and compliance assurance for both locally produced and imported pre-packaged commodities.
