🚨 NYIMBA MANHUNT AFTER TWO CHILDREN ALLEGEDLY KILLED

Police in Nyimba have launched a manhunt for a 26-year-old man, Winston Lungu, who is suspected of killing two young children following an alleged domestic dispute.

The children, 3-year-7-month-old Samuel Phiri and 9-month-old Innocent Tembo, were found dead inside a house in Samora 2 Compound in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the suspect allegedly arrived at the home of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Mary Phiri, while intoxicated.

Police say Phiri delayed opening the door because she feared he might become violent. Lungu allegedly broke a window and forced her to open the door.

An argument reportedly followed and turned physical. Police allege that Lungu strangled Phiri, but she managed to escape to a neighbour’s house.

A neighbour who responded allegedly found Lungu strangling one of the children before he fled.

Police later found both children lying dead on the floor, with blood reportedly coming from their mouths.

Phiri sustained injuries, including bruises around her neck and other parts of her body, and was taken to hospital.

The children’s bodies have been taken to Nyimba District Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Police have continued searching for Lungu, who remains at large.

Airtel unveils 50 tech scholarships for UNZA and CBU students!

Airtel Zambia has launched the Airtel Africa Fellowship, a five-year fully funded scholarship programme offering 50 scholarships to students pursuing technology-related programmes at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU).

The programme, sponsored by the Airtel Africa Foundation, will provide 25 scholarships to each university and is targeted at academically gifted students from vulnerable backgrounds.

Each selected student will receive full tuition and accommodation for five years, a laptop, monthly data connectivity, a monthly allowance and internship opportunities to help prepare them for the job market.

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Zambia Managing Director Hussam Baday said the company’s commitment to education and digital inclusion goes beyond one-off interventions.

“We are not here simply to connect people; we are here to impact livelihoods, and there is no better way to create lasting impact than by investing in the education of our citizens,” Baday said.

The launch was attended by Ministry of Education Director University Education Brian Makufele, who represented the Permanent Secretary, as well as UNZA Vice Chancellor Professor Mundia Muya and CBU Vice Chancellor Professor Imasiku Nyambe.

Applications are now open to prospective first-year students enrolled in eligible technology-related programmes at UNZA and CBU.

Applications close on October 10, 2026.

FORMER EDUCATION PS, PROCUREMENT HEAD ARRESTED OVER US$401.8M DEAL

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested and charged former Education Permanent Secretary Henry Tukombe, 57, and former Head of Procurement and Supply Jacob Masatunya, 53, over alleged procurement breaches involving a US$401.8 million government loan obligation.

The ACC says the two allegedly caused the Ministry of Education to enter into a contract with Hong Kong-based Mikalile Trading Company Limited to supply school items without following the required procurement procedures.

The alleged breaches include proceeding without a request from the user department, failing to evaluate the bid, and failing to obtain approval from the Ministerial Procurement Committee.

The contract was valued at US$259.25 million, but interest and arrangement fees brought the total obligation to US$401.84 million.

The two have since been released on bond and are expected to appear in court soon.
