On March 13, ZIIMA assembled students from the University of Zambia Main Campus for a focused training on AI surveillance, press freedom, and digital rights in Zambia.

From facial recognition to predictive policing, the students discussed how AI driven surveillance systems are expanding in the public domain, often without clear oversight, safeguards, or accountability.

The session created space for honest discussion on risks to privacy, journalism, and civic participation, while also exploring how AI can be engaged responsibly and ethically.

This was part of a training of the Unseen Eyes, a project supported by the Pulitzer Center, which investigates the real world impact of AI surveillance technologies and equips citizens, journalists and civic actors with the tools to respond through storytelling, advocacy, and policy dialogue.

ZIIMA MOURNS THE PASSING OF NORTHERN PROVINCE JOURNALIST MATIAS CHEWE

Lusaka, Zambia, 4 March 2026. The Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance (ZIIMA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Matias Chewe, a journalist and a familiar, trusted face in the Northern Province.

On behalf of our membership, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, his colleagues, and every member of the media fraternity who knew and valued him.

Matias was the kind of journalist that communities are fortunate to have had, someone who showed up, asked the questions, and made sure that the voices of ordinary people were heard.

He brought credibility and humanity to his reporting across Kasama and the wider Northern Province, and he did so with a quiet integrity that left a lasting impression on all who worked alongside him.

He was not simply a reporter. He was a colleague, a mentor to many, and a steady presence in a profession that demands so much of those who serve it faithfully. His commitment to truth was not just professional, but personal. And that is precisely what made his work matter.

The void left by his passing will be felt deeply, in newsrooms, in the communities he covered, and in the hearts of those who called him a friend.

ZIIMA stands in solidarity with everyone mourning this loss. To his family, we say this: Matias lived his life in service to others. That is a legacy worth celebrating, even in the midst of grief. We honour him, and we will not forget the standard he set.

May the Almighty grant comfort and strength to all who grieve. May Matias Chewe's soul rest in eternal peace.

Yesterday, ZIIMA convened civil society actors, journalists and civic leaders for a focused training on AI surveillance, press freedom, and digital rights in Zambia.
