Muchinga cops reject K22,000 bribe
A TRUCK driver of Eastern Province and his assistant have been detained after police officers in the land of their traditional cousins, Muchinga Province uncharacteristically turned down their K22,000 bribe.
George Ngoma, 30 and his co-driver identified as Paul Tembo aged 26 both of Chipata District were intercepted at Nambuluma Security Check Point in Chinsali District on Wednesday morning and upon routine check of their truck, police discovered 15 illegal immigrants of Somalian and Ethiopian origin.
According to Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the truck which was loaded with planks was destined for Lusaka from Nakonde.
"Initial investigations indicate that upon being stopped at the check point, officers found immigrants hiding in the truck's cabin and behind the trailer in between the planks which was covered with a tent," Chilabi explained.
To insulate themselves from a possible charge of human trafficking, the truck driver and his assistant decided to offer the cops a K22,000 bribe but Lemmy Kajoba's men rejected the bribe and instead arrested the duo along with the 15 immigrants.
"All the suspects have since been handed over to the Department of Immigration for further offences and formalities," Chilabi told Kalemba in a statement.
