TB Stigma

It’s common for people affected by TB to suffer from discrimination – as a result of the stigma and myths that surround the illness.

Why is TB stigmatised?

TB-HIV awareness raising in ZambiaIn some cultures, TB is associated with witchcraft. TB can be considered a ‘curse’ on a family, as the illness often affects multiple generations – we know that this is simply because TB is an airborne illness, which is more likely to be spread among people living in close proximity.

TB is often associated with factors that can themselves create stigma: HIV, poverty, drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness, a history of prison and refugee status.

People who are discriminated against may be isolated socially, particularly in small communities – even entire families may be shunned. Women are often blamed as the source of TB, and those affected by the illness may be divorced or considered unworthy of marriage.

The impact of stigma

Fear of discrimination can mean people with TB symptoms delay seeking help, making it much more likely that they will become seriously ill and infect others. This then perpetuates the myth that it is the TB treatment itself that causes deaths, as treatment is much less effective if left until the illness is in its advanced stages.

Stigma around TB can also make people reluctant to stick with their course of treatment – over the many months this takes – for fear of being ‘found out’. By taking treatment irregularly, people risk developing drug resistance.

Myth busting

TB is not spread through spitting or sharing crockery or cutlery. You need to be exposed to TB droplets in the air for a long period of time – typically eight hours or more – to be at risk of contracting the illness. This means the idea that TB is easily spread on public transport is also a myth.

MY WIFE C**S FIRST IN MINUTES, MAZABUKA MATRIMONY Madness.

In a comedic twist straight out of a sitcom, Mazabuka's very own Jeffrey found himself in a pickle in his five-year marriage.

A gathering of perplexed in-laws descending upon his humble abode like characters in a family drama "Mapli". Jeffrey, the hapless protagonist, spilt the beans about his bedroom blues, lamenting how his wife, Monde, always hits the finish line before he even starts the race! With three kids in tow, Jeffrey's been feeling more deflated than a popped balloon at a birthday party.

In a desperate bid for marital harmony, he proposed the age-old solution of taking a second wife. But alas, Monde wasn't having any of it, leading to a showdown of epic proportions.

Will they find a compromise, or will Jeffrey's dreams of marital bliss be dashed faster than Monde's speed record in the bedroom? We're eagerly anticipating the outcome of this situation and curious to see how it will ultimately unfold.

GIRL, 14, ARRESTED FOR STEALING 2-YR-OLD BABY

A 14-year-old girl of Kalulushi has been arrested for allegedly stealing a two-year-old child though the motive and circumstances are yet to be established.

Lydia Bwalya was arrested on Tuesday after she was found in the custody of Faraji Kasabule, who went missing for a day.

Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the boy was left in the custody of the maid while his parents left for work.

However, the boy got lost from the house located near Nyasa Road in Kalulushi around 08:00 hours and the search by the maid yielded nothing.

NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT HOW MR MKANDAWIRE IS AFFECTED BY THE ACTIONS OF THE WIFE AND KALABA

Hon Saili Mavegie Phiri shares

It's unfortunate that there is death involved otherwise, I personally would not defend Mr kalaba's action based on his popularity over the trauma Mr MKandawire is going through right now. Humanly am judging and criticizing both Mr Kalaba and Mrs MKandawire for the activities they involved themselves. Him being a public figure does not mean that he is immuned to public criticism, Am not sure about the relationship that Kalaba and the husband to the deceased shared, But if at all the husband was not aware of what was happening between the two accident victims then I have no good words for them.

The only word I would say is a sorry and quick recovery from the the pain of the accident otherwise the husband and the children are more in pain than those who have departed.so I was imagining If at all the couple had children what the father( Mr MKANDAWIRE ) tell the children? Just Imagine the trauma the husband is in right now knowing that the wife died in the hands of another man and to make the matters worse a family friend?

I will be sympathetic if at all the husband was aware of the relationship these two people shared and also the Rumors that Mr MKANDAWIRE and the deceased divorced. otherwise beyond that it's a sorry shamefull situation for both Mr Kalaba and Mrs MKANDAWIRE.
