Inside the making of Hobo

FILM MAKING in Zambia is not for the faint-hearted, and nobody told that to the crew of Hobo more clearly than the calendar did.

The idea started on a laptop after work, written in stolen evenings over three months.

By the time the first frame was locked, Hobo had been a year of writing, shooting, begging for locations, and living on coffee.

Writer and director Peron Mambo, who also carried the film from first draft to final cut, put the script together between 7pm and midnight, sending pages to Tovya Hara, a trusted script reader he calls his “script godmother.”

She read it in one sitting. Her reply was short and decisive: “This is what we do.”

That was the green light. From there, planning began in October 2024, a year set aside to shoot. Eight months have since been spent in post-production, piecing sound, color and performance into something that will outlive all of us.

THE Lusaka High Court has ordered that a 27-year-old housemaid accused of throwing her co-wife's two children into the Ngwerere River undergo a mental examination at Chainama Hills Hospital to ascertain whether she is fit to stand trial for murder.

High Court Judge Chipola Bako said Mary Kachilika of Phase 4 Meanwood, Kwamwena Township in Lusaka, should be medically examined to confirm her state of mind at the time she allegedly committed the offence and to determine whether she was able to take a plea and follow court proceedings.

Kachilika is alleged to have murdered Mathias Kamanga, six, and Tifnessi Kamanga, two, on February 25, 2026, in Lusaka.

The father of the children, Titus Kamanga, who is the accused's husband, reported the matter to the police.

Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Nthadanso Chabala, on July 2, 2026, committed Kachilika to the Lusaka High Court to undergo trial after explaining the charges to her.

When the matter came up for plea yesterday, the defence informed the court that they had an application to make on behalf of Kachilika.

"We have briefly interacted with the accused person with a view to getting instructions, and we have formed a view that the accused herein be medically examined to confirm her state of mind at the time when the accused allegedly committed the offence and also ascertain whether the accused is able to take plea and follow protocols before this honourable court," they said.

The application was made pursuant to Section 17 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), Chapter 88 of the Laws of Zambia.

In his ruling, Mr Justice Bako granted the application and ordered that Kachilika be taken to the medical facility to ascertain her medical condition at the time she allegedly committed the offence and whether she would be able to take a plea and follow court protocols.

Mr Justice Bako adjourned the case pending the hospital report.

Acting ZDML Managing Director, Emeldah Musonda said that if all managers and staff at the company which runs the Zambia Daily Mail and the Times of Zambia newspapers got risk management right, the company would reduce losses, improve efficiency, strengthen accountability, enhance public confidence and create a stronger foundation for sustainable growth.

Ms Musonda said this when she officially opened a two-day risk management workshop for senior and middle management in Lusaka yesterday.
