Judgement Day for Malanji!

Today, Lusaka Magistrate IREEN WISHIMANGA is expected to deliver judgment in a case involving former Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji, popularly known as Bonanza, and former Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba.

The two are jointly charged with 10 counts of wilful failure to comply with procedure and possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.

They were both found with a case to answer last year and placed on their defence, which they concluded earlier this year.

According to the state, between January 2020 and August 2021, Yamba, then serving as Secretary to the Treasury, irregularly authorised the transfer of K108 million to the Zambian Mission in Turkey for real estate procurement. The prosecution contends that the transaction did not follow established financial procedures.

In the same period, Malanji is accused of possessing a Bell 430 helicopter, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger, the Gibson Royal Hotel, and three houses in Silverest, all believed to be tainted property acquired through proceeds of crime. He has consistently denied owning the assets in question.

During his defence, Malanji called two witnesses, among them former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Chalwe Lombe, who confirmed travelling with him to Turkey in December 2020 on a special assignment from then President Edgar Lungu.

Another witness, FNB banker Dyson Ntenga, testified about large cash deposits made in the accounts of Gibson Air Charter, the company said to have purchased the aircraft.

Both Malanji and Yamba have maintained their innocence, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated.

The judgment, which will determine whether the two walk free or face conviction, is expected to be delivered before Resident Magistrate Ireen Wishimanga this afternoon.

To: His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema

Your Excellency,

I write to you as a deeply concerned wife, fearing for the life of my beloved husband, Dr. Chishimba Kambwili, who is currently serving a sentence in Chimbokaila Correctional Facility. His health has deteriorated significantly. He suffers from chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which require constant monitoring and timely medical care. Unfortunately, in his current state, he has not been able to access the urgent treatment he needs.

If his situation remains unchecked, I fear the worst, that we may lose him while in custody. This is not just a matter of law, but of humanity and compassion. I am therefore making a humble and heartfelt plea for your intervention, Your Excellency. Please allow my husband to be taken to a medical facility for immediate attention. Once he has been treated and stabilised, the authorities can return him to prison to continue serving his sentence.

This request is not about seeking preferential treatment, but about preserving a life. As a leader who has always spoken about upholding human dignity and the sanctity of life, I trust you will consider this appeal favourably.

I pray for your wisdom, compassion, and understanding in this matter.

Yours sincerely,
Carol Kambwili
Wife to Dr. Chishimba Kambwili

Trial Begins in Battle for ECL Body
Pretoria-Monday 4th August 2025

The matter in which President Hakainde Hichilema wants the remains of Zambia's Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu to be repatriated to Zambia for funeral and burial comes up today in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria Division, at a Special Motion in which the parties will argue the matter.

The State has argued that it is tradition and culture that former presidents are buried at a national monument, Embassy Park in Lusaka.

For this purpose the Attorney General of the Republic of Zambia, Mulilo Kabesha SC has sued the Widow, the Children and the family Spokesperson for the court to compel them to surrender the body to the State.

The Widow, Mama Esther Lungu and her children have argued that the Court action is misdirected as decisions of the funeral and burial of a deceased petson is a matter for the next-of-kin and the family as supported by tradition, culture, domestic and international law.

Activities have been seen with Hichilema’s forces coming together;
1. President Hakainde Hichilema using;
2. Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha.
3. Robert Chabinga, expelled Mafinga MP and Hichilema’s surrogate PF President.

4. Groupings called Progressive Forces of South Africa.

5. Zimbabwean rogue journalist Simbarashe Chikanza.

Judgment will be delivered on 18th August 2025.
