The entertainment industry has changed so much over the years, particularly in terms of unity and mutual respect. When I joined ZBS back in 1970, I was fortunate to be part of an incredibly talented group. Among them were Charles Muyamwa, Charles Mando, Fred Chungu, Mann Sichalwe, Maryo Malyo, and Matteo Phiri. Despite the intense competition, it was always healthy, we were friends who socialized together and genuinely cared for each other. Had they been alive today, I’m certain we’d still be close, aging together as friends.
Even later generations, including Margaret Zimba, Doris Mulenga, Doreen Mukonzo, Chabala Chimpampa, Margaret Chimanse, and Chellah Katwishi, preserved this spirit of friendship and support. But unfortunately, today’s entertainment world has become a space where jealousy, competition, and public insults dominate, with many simply driven by money and a thirst for attention. These rivalries, often played out on social media, set a poor example for future generations, it’s truly a shame.
In the end, the artists we celebrate today… Macky 2, Chef 187, Danny Kaya, Exile, Nalu, B-Flow, Maiko Zulu, Sista D, Esther Chungu, and others who understand that success is not defined by stepping over others but by lifting them up. To the younger generation, learn from these icons. Real power lies not in insults but in inspiration, not in rivalry but in respect.
To those in the industry today, and to the upcoming artists eager to make their mark, let this be a reminder, fame is fleeting, but character endures. Social media feuds might attract followers, but they don’t build legacies. True success lies in the bonds we form, the respect we show, and the support we give each other. There is enough room in the Zambian entertainment and media world for everyone, and there’s more to be gained by working together than by tearing each other apart.
As we continue to grow as an industry, let’s hold each other up. The spotlight is big enough for all of us. Let love lead!
