Court Sets Dates in Esther Lungu Theft Case

The Lusaka Magistrates' Court has set November 16, 2026 for mention and trial dates in a case in which former First Lady ESTHER LUNGU and four others are charged with theft of motor vehicles.

In the matter, Mrs. LUNGU and four police officers face four counts of theft of motor vehicles allegedly belonging to ELIZABETH PHIRI, a relative of the former First Lady.

Mrs. LUNGU is also separately accused of taking a certificate of title for a house belonging to Mrs. PHIRI in Lusaka's Libala area.

In addition, Mrs. LUNGU faces a charge of possessing 400,000 US dollars suspected to be proceeds of crime.

SANITY has returned to Lusaka's Central Business District (C*D) as many vendors oblige to the order of moving into the markets.

Under the leadership of Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa, the Lusaka City Council has embarked on a city-wide operation to restore order by moving all vendors from street into designated markets.

The once congested and chaotic C*D is now clear, clean and accessible.

Pavements that were turned into trading spaces are now free for pedestrians, traffic flow has improved, and the city is regaining its dignity.

Mr Chitambala says this is not a one-off exercise but a sustained initiative to ensure Lusaka remains a clean, orderly and business-friendly city for all.

Pictures show some of the selected areas such as Lumunba, Cairo, Chachacha and Freedom Way roads in the C*D free of street vending.

Police spokesperson confirms retirement in national interest

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi has confirmed that he has been retired from the Zambia Police Service in national interest, but has declined to comment on the reasons behind the decision.
