GROUNDBREAKING OF PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING PLANT AT LUSAKA SOUTH MULTI-FACILITY ECONOMIC ZONE

The Government of the Republic of Zambia today held a groundbreaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing plant at the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone. President Hakainde Hichilema was represented by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, MP.

The new facility, a joint venture between the Government through the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) and India’s Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, marks a major step in advancing Zambia’s health sovereignty, economic diversification, and industrial transformation.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Hon. Nkandu highlighted the Government’s progress in restoring medicine availability in public health facilities - rising from below 40% in 2021 to over 80% in 2025. He attributed this improvement to decisive reforms in procurement, governance, and supply chain management. He further noted that national allocations for medicines and medical supplies had increased from K1.2 billion in 2021 to K4.9 billion in 2025, underscoring the UPND administration’s commitment to equitable and reliable healthcare access.

The new plant will enable Zambia to produce over 750 types of medicines and medical supplies locally, significantly reducing reliance on imports and positioning the country as a regional hub for pharmaceutical excellence. Beyond strengthening the health sector, the project will generate employment opportunities for young people across construction, technical, research, and production roles.

President Hichilema commended Akums and the Government of India for their partnership, reaffirming Zambia’s readiness to support local manufacturing and ensure a transparent, investor-friendly environment.

PF MAY ADOPT NEW NAME AMID INTERNAL DISPUTE

Opposition party, Patriotic Front (PF) says it may rebrand if it fails to reclaim its official party name, currently controlled by a rival faction.

Given Lubinda, the party's acting president, told Millennium TV that the PF is exploring several options, including negotiations with Robert Chabinga, who holds the registered party name.

"We could abandon it and use another vehicle," Mr Lubinda said, comparing the situation to passengers switching buses when one breaks down.

The PF plans to hold a convention in late November, either under its current name or an alternative.

The party hopes the judiciary will resolve the dispute before the convention, though Mr Lubinda acknowledged a full trial may be necessary.

"Chabinga has the registered name called Patriotic Front. But does he have the party? No," he said, insisting that party members remain loyal to the central committee elected alongside former president Edgar Lungu in 2021.

Mr Lubinda admitted keeping the party united has been challenging since its 2021 election defeat, with many members distancing themselves or resigning.

He dismissed allegations that he wanted to merge the PF with the Socialist Party, saying he was simply following Mr Lungu's vision to unite opposition parties against the ruling UPND government.

"There's no person who can be more loyal to the Patriotic Front than myself," Mr Lubinda said.

LOW TURNOUT MARS ZAMBIA'S VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

Zambia's mass voter registration exercise ahead of the 2026 general elections is experiencing disappointingly low turnout, despite the Electoral Commission's deployment of 2,300 registration teams across the country.

Electoral Commission of Zambia Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro acknowledged the challenge but expressed optimism about the process. The commission has stationed an average of 10 teams per constituency, with each team spending four days at designated polling stations before rotating to new locations.

Citizens who managed to register cited inadequate public awareness as the primary reason for poor participation. One first-time voter noted the process was quick due to few people showing up, adding that many Zambians remain unaware of the ongoing exercise.

The commission has faced some technical challenges, particularly with power supply. However, Kasaro assured that all registration kits are equipped with rechargeable batteries capable of running for eight hours, supplemented by portable generators at each centre. He described initial problems as "teething issues," noting that less than three percent of stations experienced difficulties.

The registration exercise follows a carefully planned timeline designed to balance adequate preparation time with maintaining public interest. Following the registration period, the commission will spend December and January preparing a draft register, which will be available for public inspection in February. A certified register of voters is expected by 30 April 2026 ensuring sufficient time for the general elections.

UPND CONDEMNS RETURN OF PF CADREISM

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has issued a stern warning against resurgent political violence, accusing Patriotic Front factions of reviving the intimidation tactics that characterised their time in government.

In a statement released Thursday, UPND Deputy National Spokesperson Elvis Chishala Nkandu cited two recent incidents highlighting what he described as "entrenched thuggery" within the PF. Acting PF President Given Lubinda was forced to abandon a radio interview at Phoenix FM after suspected party cadres surrounded the station, while suspected PF supporters invaded opposition politician Sean Tembo's residence, disrupting a press briefing and blocking journalist access.

"These are deliberate tactics designed to commandeer power through fear rather than persuasion," Nkandu stated, calling on PF factions aligned with Lubinda and Brian Mundubile to disown violent methods.

The UPND warned that unchecked violence could undermine the 2026 elections, potentially discouraging voter participation after a series of peaceful by-elections under the current administration.

Nkandu urged law enforcement agencies to act impartially against political violence, emphasising that democracy requires freedom, respect, and rule of law rather than intimidation.

"Politics should be about ideas, not intimidation," the statement concluded, calling on the PF to engage in issue-based dialogue and restore discipline among its membership.

POLICE ARREST THREE CHINESE NATIONALS AND ZAMBIAN SECURITY GUARD OVER COPPER THEFT ON THE COPPERBELT

Police on the Copperbelt have arrested three Chinese nationals and a Zambian security guard in connection with the theft of 470 plates of copper cathodes belonging to Blackswan Limited Mining Company, a Chinese-owned and operated firm.

According to reports, the suspects allegedly hijacked a truck transporting the copper and diverted it to a private residence, prompting the company to offer a $20,000 reward for its safe return. The truck was later recovered at the Blackswan premises by police.

Those arrested include Mike Chan, a 29-year-old Chinese national serving as Chief Security Officer; Mei Hua and Tsui Guanzi, both 55-year-old Chinese nationals employed as blast furnace operators; and Ethan Musonda, a 25-year-old Zambian security guard from Green Shield Security Company.

Sources indicate that the copper was being transported by Petrologistics using a truck bearing registration numbers T720EAF and T696EBQ.

No official statement has been released, as Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Pethias Siandenge was on leave. In line with protocol, Deputy Police Commanding Officer Edwin Kaluba must await the Commissioner’s return before issuing a report.

Meanwhile, Eric Shen, CEO of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, requested additional details before commenting on the matter but has not responded since.

LUBINDA ABANDONS RADIO INTERVIEW AS PF CADRES GATHER OUTSIDE STATION

Acting Patriotic Front President Given Lubinda abruptly cancelled a scheduled radio interview on Phoenix FM on Wednesday after his security team spotted a group of people dressed in PF regalia gathered outside the radio station premises.

According to Phoenix FM, which announced the development on air, Lubinda's team informed the station that they could not identify the individuals in the crowd and therefore deemed it unsafe for the acting president to proceed with the interview.

The incident is the latest manifestation of the deepening security concerns within Zambia's fractured opposition, as rival factions within both the PF and the broader Tonse Alliance engage in increasingly confrontational tactics.

Context: A Party and Alliance in Crisis
The security scare comes amid a bitter power struggle that has split the Patriotic Front and paralysed the Tonse Alliance. The opposition coalition has reached a full-scale rupture, with two rival camps each claiming to be the legitimate leadership—one led by Sean Tembo and Chris Zumani Zimba, the other by Raphael Nakacinda, Given Lubinda, and Danny P**e.

Violence has become a recurring feature of the internal opposition battles. In late September, suspected Patriotic Front cadres stormed a press briefing led by Sean Tembo, forcing police to intervene after journalists were blocked and threatened. The briefing had to be abruptly moved from Palm Valley Resort to Tembo's private residence after the initial venue was overrun.

The Leadership Vacuum
The Tonse Alliance was formed in November 2024 with former president Edgar Lungu chosen as both Alliance Chairperson and presidential candidate for the 2026 general election. However, the alliance lost its unifying leader when Lungu passed away on June 5, 2025.

When Lungu died in June, the alliance lost its only figure who commanded universal authority among its members, creating a vacuum that has erupted into open war. Given Lubinda, who had been appointed as the Tonse Alliance acting chairperson during Lungu's absence, continued in that role after Lungu's death.

Parallel Power Structures
The situation has become so fractured that Zambia effectively now has two Tonse Alliances, two councils of leaders, and no clear candidate for 2026.

On October 6, the PF Central Committee, meeting under Lubinda's chairmanship, declared the purported "Tonse List" of expanded leadership positions illegal and resolved that only the PF Secretary General or the duly recognised Tonse Alliance Chairperson may convene alliance meetings involving PF members.

Meanwhile, the Tembo-Zimba faction has proceeded with its own plans, announcing a national congress scheduled for November 29 to elect a chairperson and presidential candidate. The Nakacinda-Lubinda camp has refused to recognise this process, branding it a "parallel circus."

Casualties of the Split
The New Congress Party has announced its withdrawal from the Tonse Alliance, with party leader Peter Chanda accusing alliance partners of greed, ego, and sidelining meaningful consultation in decision-making.

Political commentator Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya has described the Tonse Alliance as being in "freefall," with the coalition once seen as a potent opposition force now mired in a full-blown leadership crisis marked by open defiance, conflicting declarations, and an alarming absence of discipline.

Growing Concerns Over Political Violence
Wednesday's security incident raises fresh concerns about the use of intimidation and violence in Zambian opposition politics. The fact that Lubinda's own security team could not identify whether the crowd outside Phoenix FM consisted of supporters or opponents underscores the depth of the factional divisions within the party.

Political observers note that until the bishops' mediation succeeds or one side concedes, Zambia's opposition remains at war with itself, making it increasingly difficult for voters to determine who speaks for whom.

With less than a year until the 2026 general elections, the opposition's ongoing chaos continues to raise questions about its ability to present a credible and united challenge to President Hakainde Hichilema's ruling UPND government.

Phoenix FM has not yet announced whether the interview with Lubinda will be rescheduled.
