COACH’S TAKEAWAY: Sichone Blames Lack of Preparedness For Loss to Morocco

Zambia national team interim head coach Moses Sichone says the Chipolopolo exhibited lack of preparedness in last night’s 3-0 defeat to hosts Morocco in their final 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Group A match played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The Chipolopolo bowed out of the ongoing tournament at the first hurdle as goals from striker Ayoub Kaabi who scored a brace with another coming through Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz saw the Atlas Lions top Group A with 7 points while the 2012 winners finished bottom with 2 points following their loss.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Sichone admitted that his side were not ready to confront the task to stop the tournament’s favourites, Morocco who were backed by their home support.

“The players didn’t look to be prepared but when a day comes like the way it has come today it is unfortunate that it is hard to find the words [to explain reason behind the lack of preparedness] because most of the players didn’t show up in the match, so we need to excuse ourselves over the performance but in the second half we looked better but it was too late,” Sichone told journalists in Rabat last night.

Sichone bemoaned the Chipolopolo’s early exit from the competition while insisting that the country must continue banking on the same side for the future as football demands time before reaping success.

“It is hard for us to leave the competition but there is nothing that we can do, we can only wish the other teams that have qualified all the best in their coming games and as for us, we have to go home and make plans over how are going to use this team,” he said.

He continued: “In football it is never too late, football is about resting and giving it time. Football is not like investing in something today and tomorrow you start harvesting or enjoying. So in football you need to give it time and for sure Zambia needs a bit of time and I’m sure come next Africa Cup, we will definitely see a different team.”

Meanwhile, Sichone also expressed his dissatisfaction over some of the refereeing decisions made in the match by the Senegalese match-officiating panel led by Issa Sy.

“I didn’t like the way the referee officiated the game, that is why I was upset over some decisions. I am sure this is not an excuse but everyone saw how he [referee] officiated the game,” he said.

Zambia have been eliminated from the 2025 AFCON after drawing twice against Mali and Comoros prior to last night’s defeat to Morocco who will be joined by the Malians who finished second with three points despite not yet recording a victory at the tournament.

Mali and Comoros played out to a barren draw in their final group match played in Casablanca and finish second and third respectively with Zambia placed bottom of the Group A after managing two draws.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE: Katongo Demands Consistent Qualification For Chipolopolo Before Talking AFCON Triumph Ambitions

Zambia national team legend & 2012 AFCON winning captain Christopher Katongo says the Chipolopolo should not be under pressure to triumph at upcoming 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco this month.

Katongo who featured at four AFCON tournaments before finally lifting the title in 2012 in Gabon, has urged the nation not to be highly expectant as the Chipolopolo are still gaining the needed experience in order compete for the title at the continental showpiece.

“It is a learning phase and we cannot complain on that one. We can’t push you guys to go win the Africa Cup, I’ve been at the Africa Cup and to win it, we need more experience and participation at the national team that is when you can compete,” Katongo told FAZ media.

The 43-year old former attacker who amassed over 100 caps for Chipolopolo between 2003 and 2016, says the Chipolopolo must cement their place at the AFCON before targeting to lift the title at the biennial tournament.

“The more you qualify is the more you are likely to compete to go into the next stage but if you are not qualifying to the Africa Cup then it is a disaster because we going to be behind,” he said.

Chipolopolo are in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Mali and Comoros at the AFCON tournament set to kick-off on Sunday, 21st December, 2025.

ZAMBIAN CHAMPIONS UPBEAT: ‘We Are On A Mission’ – Oswald Mutapa Confident Ahead of ‘Difficult’ Berkane Encounter

Zambian champions Power Dynamos head coach Oswald Mutapa says his side are determined to deliver a positive result in their opening TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group A encounter against Moroccan heavyweights RS Berkane on Saturday night.

Power return to Morocco for the first time in 22 years as they face Berkane at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Oudja tomorrow.

The last time Power faced a Moroccan side was in September, 2003 when they lost 1-0 to Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca in that year’s CAF African Winners Cup quarter-finals.

Speaking at the pre-match presser ahead of tomorrow night’s clash, Mutapa said Power anticipate a competitive encounter against Berkane but also declared his charges prepared to match the reigning CAF Confederation Cup champions’ challenge and post a crucial result.

“We expect a difficult match, similar to those in the qualification rounds, but we are on a mission. The team is ready mentally and physically, starting the group stage with a win is crucial. Every point matter,” Mutapa said.

Meanwhile, Power vice-captain Salulani Phiri acknowledged the great pedigree Berkane hold in African football but also insisted that he and his teammates will be ready and equal to the task ahead.

“We know Berkane’s history, but we are equally motivated. We have prepared well and we will fight for a positive result,” he said.

Power and Berkane square-off at the Stade Municipal de Berkane at 21:00 hours CAT in the opening Group A encounter while in the other group fixture, reigning CAF Champions League winners Pyramids FC host Rivers United of Nigeria in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

MWEENE ON A MISSION: ‘...But We Can Do More’ – Mweene Aiming To Improve Chipolopolo Goalkeeping Department

NEW Zambia national team goalkeeper coach Kennedy Mweene says he is impressed and eager to improve the team’s goalkeeping department following back-to-back friendlies against South Africa and Angola in the just concluded November FIFA international break.

The 46-year old 2012 AFCON winning legend took up his role as goalkeeper trainer the first time since his appointment last week as Chipolopolo succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Bafana Bafana in Port Elizabeth last week and another 3-2 loss to Angola in Luanda on Tuesday.

Speaking in an interview after the two friendly matches, Mweene said he did not have a second thought on taking up the goalkeeping role with the national team when he was first approached as he always aimed to help the nation benefit from his expertise in the goalkeeping department.

“The first time they contacted me I didn’t even hesitate because I really wanted to contribute one way or another to the national team especially when it comes to goalkeeping,” Mweene said.

Mweene, who also doubles up as goalkeeper trainer for South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, said he is impressed with the output of the Chipolopolo goalkeepers but intends to work on improving them even more.

“My first impression when we got to camp was good even though I did not have enough time. I think we had two training sessions and I think from what I’ve seen, I’m okay but we can do more,” he said.

With the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations coming up next month, Mweene says he intends to fine-tune the Chipolopolo goal-minders in several goalkeeping techniques from his training manual.

“I think as days go by and as we meet again in camp I think there are a lot of aspects we need to work on as goalkeepers, so for me it looks encouraging and I’m happy with what I’ve seen with the keepers I was with,” he said.

Mweene is part of the new interim Chipolopolo technical set-up led by Moses Sichone who will lead the team at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco starting next month.

FIRST GOAL DELIGHT: Chipolopolo Newbie Jack Lahne Sets Sights on AFCON After Scoring Against Angola

New Chipolopolo entrant Jack Lahne Kalichi says he is bracing himself up to represent the nation at the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next month.

The 24-year old Austria-based striker scored a brilliant strike to get off the mark in his debut start for Chipolopolo in the 3-2 defeat to Angola in Luanda yesterday.

Speaking after the match, Kalichi said he is honored and had been looking forward to finding the back of the net for the first time Zambian colours.

“When it happened I was proud, I was proud to score my first goal. I was saying to everybody that I just want to score here, hopefully next time it’ll be at AFCON,” Kalichi told FAZ media in Luanda.

Born in Chikankata, Kalichi was adopted by Swedish parents at an early age and went on to represent that country at different youth levels before recently opting to represent Zambia.

He made his debut in the Chipolopolo’s 3-1 defeat to South Africa in Port Elizabeth after coming off the bench to replace Patson Daka in the friendly played earlier on Friday.

Kalichi who features for SC Austria Lustenau in the Austrian second-tier, netted in the 20th minute to restore parity Chipolopolo after falling behind just six minutes into the match as the hosts lead through midfielder Milson.

Chipolopolo were trailing once again three minutes to the end of the first-half as Zito Luvumbo scored for the Palancas Negras before Fashion Sakala restored three minutes after the restart.

Frenchman Patrice Beaumelle, a former Chipolopolo trainer, ultimately got his first win as Angola coach thanks to a 58th goal by Jô Paciencia and handed Zambia their second defeat in the November FIFA international break.

EVERY TEAM HAS ITS OWN WEAKNESS- KANYEMBA

Zambia Under 17 Women's team Head Coach Carol Kanyemba has said that Canada is a very good team which is capable of getting physical at times just like the way they did against Nigeria.

Despite acknowledging Canada to be a good side she also said every team has its own weaknesses and the girls will look to capitalize on that.

Coach Carol Kanyemba says tomorrow's game will need to be approached with a different attitude and on the technical side's role she believes they have done their job accordingly
