Who stole the Police land cruiser?

Accused testifies;

“I’m not sick enough to steal a police vehicle clearly labelled Zambia Police,” accused tells court

The Chipata High Court has heard accused Robert Mapili, 29, deny stealing and driving away a police vehicle, saying he does not know how to drive.

Mapili, who is facing one count of aggravated robbery, made the remarks while giving his defence before Judge Ketra Walubita.

“I’m not sick enough to steal a police motor vehicle clearly labelled Zambia Police. I don’t even know how to drive a car. I have never driven one before in my entire life,” Mapili told the court.

He also denied attacking two police officers with a catapult at a roadblock along the Lundazi-Chama Road on July 17, 2025.

Mapili admitted being at the roadblock after a motorbike he was testing was impounded, but denied returning to attack the officers and driving away with the police vehicle.

During cross-examination, State Advocate Sydney Siafwa asked Mapili to try on slippers allegedly found inside the abandoned police vehicle. However, Judge Walubita ruled that the slippers did not fit him.

Earlier, arresting officer Inspector Mabiya Masumo testified that Mapili attacked two officers with catapult projectiles before allegedly driving away with the police vehicle.

The case has been adjourned to September 25, 2026, for judgment.
