THE OLD DRIFT, a novel by the Zambian author, Namwali Serpell follows three generations of three families, telling the story of a nation, and of the grand sweep of time.

On the banks of the Zambezi River, a few miles from the majestic Victoria Falls, there was once a colonial settlement called The Old Drift. Here begins the story of a small African nation, told by a swarm-like chorus that calls itself man’s greatest nemesis.

A mistake by an Old Drifter named Percy M. Clark, entangles the fates of an Italian hotelier and an African busboy. This sets off a cycle of unwitting retribution between three Zambian families as they collide and converge over the course of the century, into the present and beyond.

From a woman covered with hair and another plagued with endless tears, to forbidden love affairs and fiery political ones, to homegrown technological marvels – this novel sweeps over the years and the globe.

It is available on Amazon.com

The mother hen does not stop hatching eggs just because the hawk has taken her chicks.

The Igbo people express this more practically, drawing from their experience during the civil war they fought:

'A naghị e kwo mgbagbu ghara ọgụ' – meaning, we cannot abandon or avoid war simply because people are killed on the battlefield.

Meaning: Misfortune, no matter how severe, should not discourage us from pursuing causes we believe to be genuine and just."

Explanation:

This proverb reflects resilience in the face of adversity. It uses the imagery of a mother hen, who, despite losing her chicks to a hawk, continues to lay eggs and nurture them. This symbolizes the unyielding spirit to keep pushing forward despite setbacks.

Similarly, the Igbo version of the proverb emphasizes that the fear of casualties in war should not prevent people from engaging in a justified fight. It illustrates the importance of persistence in the face of challenges, especially when pursuing what one believes to be righteous or necessary.

Ultimately, both expressions teach that setbacks or losses should not deter us from pursuing our goals, especially if they are meaningful and justifiable.
