FRA engages farmers ahead of grain season

By Witu Sindano

Agricultural Experts have urged the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to strengthen engagement with small‑scale farmers ahead of this year’s grain marketing season.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, Dr. Frank Kayula said that consultations in several districts helped establish suitable market prices for produce.

“We gave a survey of what is expected of the small‑scale farmers, and 340 to 370 Kwacha per 50kg bag will be fine,” Dr. Kayula said.

He noted that last year’s season was marred by high commodity prices, limited access to fertilizer, high transport costs, and delayed payments.

Zambia’s Data Protection Act has strengthened the legal framework for collecting and processing personal data, but regulators say enforcement and compliance remain a challenge.

Data Protection Commissioner Mr. Likando Luywa said that registering organizations handling personal data is the first step toward effective oversight.

“We need to understand who is collecting this data, what they are collecting it for, where they have the data and how they store it,” he said.

Luywa explained that registration will create accountability among data controllers and processors, enabling authorities to monitor compliance.

How traditional Chief burials have changed over time

By Foustina Mwale,Eduardo Banda

Behind Zambia’s traditional communities, what generational practices have survived for thousands of years, and how have the customs, beliefs, and rituals that once honoured leaders in death now evolved?

A thousand years ago, the death of a chief was more than the passing of a leader. It marked the beginning of a sacred journey into the ancestral world.

According to oral traditions passed down by elders, chiefs were sometimes buried alongside chosen individuals, or even their wives, who were believed to accompany them into the afterlife.

This practice reflected a deep-rooted belief that death was not an end, but a transition to another realm where the chief would continue his leadership among the ancestors.

For many kingdoms, these people were considered escorts, ensuring that the chief did not enter the next world alone.

Although the practice may seem shocking or cruel by today’s standards, it was viewed at the time as a demonstration of loyalty, respect, and devotion to traditional authority.
