John Chiti Launches Zambia’s First Miss Albinism Reality Show

Executive producer of Miss Albinism Zambia, John Chiti, has called for equal opportunities for people with albinism in the entertainment industry, saying their skin colour should not determine their chances of succeeding.

Speaking in an interview with Lusaka Star, Chiti said the idea was inspired by the absence of similar platforms in Zambia despite other African countries, including Kenya, having hosted shows involving people with albinism.

“I realised that Zambia has never had modelling for people with albinism," He said.

"Other African countries had such shows like Kenya, which inspired me".

He said one of the major challenges he faced when starting the project was financing, as he had to use his own money to support the initiative.

‎The first cry of a newborn is often expected to bring overwhelming joy, excitement and hope. But for some mothers, that joyful moment is quickly overshadowed by feelings of sadness, exhaustion and emotional distress that they never expected.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is depression that happens during pregnancy or in the first year after giving birth.

It’s common, and it’s not a sign of weakness or bad parenting. It’s a medical condition tied to hormone shifts, sleep loss, stress, and other factors.

Agricultural expert welcomes FRA Maize price increase.

An agricultural expert has praised Government's decision to increase the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize buying price from K340 to K347 per 50-kilogram bag, saying the move will improve farmers' incomes and encourage agricultural production.

Agricultural expert Dr. Oliver Bulaya Kandela said the price adjustment shows Government's commitment to ensuring that farmers receive fair and cost-effective returns after spending heavily on production, farm inputs and other operational costs.

“This demonstrates Government's commitment to ensuring that farmers receive more equitable and cost-effective prices for their produce after investing heavily in production and facing rising input and operational costs," Dr. Kandela explained.

He said the revised floor price is expected to strengthen farmers' confidence in maize production and encourage greater investment in farming activities across the country.

Dr. Kandela, however, said the announcement came later than expected, adding that FRA should have announced the buying price earlier to help farmers make informed marketing decisions.

FRA Defends maize buying policy.

The Food Reserve Agency’s refusal to buy high‑moisture maize has drawn expert support, with stakeholders saying the move protects taxpayers and national food security.

Former Food Reserve Agency (FRA) Marketing Manager Hon. Dr. Edify Hamukale said, buying maize with high moisture is essentially wasting taxpayers’ money.

“If the grain later spoils, citizens will be the first to condemn the agency, FRA is following science, not emotion,” he said.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, Economist Trevor Hambayi said the FRA price is acceptable but the quantity is inadequate.

He cautioned that with climate risks ahead, Zambia cannot afford thin reserves, as this could force costly imports.

FAZ Reveals U17 technical bench.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed veteran coach Chris Kaunda as under-17 Men’s National Team coach.

kaunda Will be deputised by Denise Makinka while Dabwitso Nkhoma, Collins Mbesuma and Joshua Titima have been appointed as the second assistant,striker and goalkeeper coaches respectively.

Speaking in a statement General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said that the appointment of the U17 bench was meant to give the team tragectory ahead of the Cosafa engagement which is a gateway to the AFCON which subsequently serves as World Cup qualifier.

"The appointment of the U17 technical bench is meant to give them room to start preparations for the forthcoming assignment," he said.

"We are confident that the experience that coach kaunda brings to the table will re-energize the team.”

The quiet decline of a lifelong habit in the digital age

There was a time when reading was more than a school requirement. Many young people spent hours immersed in novels, fairy tales and other books simply for the joy of reading.

Today, that culture is slowly changing.

Across Zambia's university campuses, students are spending less time reading books and more time consuming short-form content on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Educators say the shift is beginning to affect students' writing, critical thinking and communication skills.

Chibwe Henry, a lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, says the difference is easy to spot.

"A student who reads widely tends to draw connections between ideas, uses evidence effectively and shows originality."

The fight against fake pages as Zambia heads to the polls

As Zambia moves closer to the general elections, social media has become the country’s digital battlefield. It is where campaigns are launched, promises are made, opinions are formed, and breaking news is consumed in real time. However, alongside the convenience of instant information lies a growing danger of fake social media pages created to deceive, manipulate, and divide the public.

These fake pages often impersonate respected media houses, politicians, public personalities, and influential individuals. Rather than educating the public, they are designed to manipulate political narratives, attract thousands of followers within a short time, and, in many cases, generate income through monetized content.

The consequences stretch far beyond social media likes and shares. False information can easily mislead voters about candidates, election procedures, polling events, and even election results. Such misinformation has the potential to create unnecessary panic, deepen political tensions, and increase division among citizens.

Solar power can be an easy fix but comes with hidden costs - Yusuf Dodia

A Lusaka-based Economist has cautioned that Zambia’s push for large-scale solar projects could create long-term environmental problems, urging government to prioritize hydroelectric power as a sustainable solution to the country’s energy crisis.

This came after President Hakainde Hichilema commissioned the second phrase of the Chisamba Solar plant yesterday.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, Yusuf Dodia said, solar power can be an easy fix but comes with hidden costs.

“Whenever you do solar power, you need vast amounts of land for panels and huge battery banks to store energy which later become toxic waste, poisoning land and underground water if not properly disposed of,” Dodia said.
