Farmers oppose FRA maize demand

By Mubita Katete

Farmers in Southern Province have raised concerns over a new government directive requiring them to sell at least 10 bags of maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) before they can access subsidized inputs under Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

The directive, recently announced by the Ministry of Agriculture is being met with resistance from small-scale farmers who say the condition is unfair, particularly for those who experienced poor yields during the last farming season.

“This requirement is going to hit small-scale farmers the hardest,” said Cyprian Chimwendo Phiri, Executive Director of Go Back to the Land Zambia in a statement.

SAFADA launches initiative to assist farmers not on FISP

By Mapalo Chinungwe

The Small-Scale Farmers Development Agency (SAFADA) has launched an initiative aimed at assisting farmers who are not on the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) to purchase fertilizer.

In a press statement, SAFADA Executive Director Boyd Moobwe said the agency will collaborate with international partners to provide fertilizer at 50 percent cash up front, with the remaining 50 percent to be paid after harvest.

“The farmers will have to sell their maize to SAFADA through the Zambia Commodity Exchange in order to facilitate smooth loan recovery. This arrangement is designed to provide input support without collateral, interest or hidden costs,” Mr Moobwe said.

Dizmo blasts Boomplay over royalties

By Nancy Siamalichaula

Celebrated Zambian Rapper Ephraim Kasonde, popularly known as Dizmo says music streaming platform Boomplay has failed to pay Zambian artists their royalties due to its limited revenue model in the country.

Appearing on DJ Pressure T’s podcast, Dizmo revealed that he too has not received his royalties from the platform, attributing the challenge to how Boomplay generates its income.

The Hip-hop hit maker explained that most of Boomplay’s revenue comes from advertising by companies such as Trade Kings, rather than from music subscriptions.

Government creates over 150,000 youth employments

By Gerald Mambwe

President Hakainde Hichilema has disclosed that government has created over 150,000 youth jobs since assuming office in 2021.

President Hichilema said in the past four years and some weeks, the government has employed young people in the health and education sectors, as well as in the Zambia Army, Zambia National Service, Police, Correctional Facilities, and the mines.

Speaking when he addressed University of Zambia (UNZA) students at State House this afternoon, the Head of State said his government wants to continue creating jobs by growing the economy.

“This is why our government is working hard to improve the economy. When we took office, the economy was declining with a negative growth rate of minus 2.8 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP)," he added.

"Even during the worst drought last year, we managed to revive the economy, achieving a 4 percent growth rate from the negative 2.8 percent."
