EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY/ICT
As the world is evolving, many things are evolving and systems are changing in accordance with the evolving world. Technology has become the center stage of many operations either home, office, industry or Business. Therefore, as human capital or labour force, companies, institutions, businesses or at a personal level, embracing technology is not an option or by choice but it has become a mandatory thing. For example, in many Banks, transactions over the teller are becoming very few forcing their clients to adapt to new technological advancements being put in place.

Technology is not leaving anyone regardless of age, tradition, race or ethnic grouping. A BIG QUESTION then comes in! With all these innovations and technology advancements, what should one do to keep up with these technological advancements? The answer lies in CHANGE & ADAPT to new trends. Accept that we are leaving in the 21st Century no matter which century you were born. Time has changed so the need for us to change. I remember in my life finishing school without knowing what a computer is and what it does (coming from a rural setup) and getting exposed to all sorts of different gadgets and devices was a challenge. The earlier you realise that things have changed the better so that you embrace the change and conform to the new ideologies and trends of ICT.

Therefore, to make sure you are moving with the digital age of the 21st Century, the YOUNG – let me refer to them as “Digital Natives”, The Middle Aged – I refer to them as the “The Mixture (a generation of people with and without knowledge of ICT)” & The Old Aged – “I refer to them as BBC (Born Before Computers – people of who at their time technology never existed. It has found them), there’s need for all of us to acquire the skills and knowledge to enable us manage our day-day life activities. One way or the other let’s get the basic Training and orientation on how systems operate
Therefore, lets find time to empower ourselves by looking for knowledge and skills of the 21st Century Workspace and enjoy the journey of ICT.

Children & Technology Part 2: Keeping them Away from Their Screens!
Love it or hate it, smart devices (Phones, iPad’s, Tablets, e-Readers, Camera’s, TV’s, Computers, etc.) are part of our society and in our children’s lives and they are here to stay and this is a fact.
These technologies offer a lot of opportunities for more engaged self-learning. Technology can help a child’s progression and development in subjects that have been known from time in memorial to have had a history/reputation for struggling to engross pupils, such as math or physics.
However, technology has another sad or shameful side of it. Although we would not like to admit, smart devices also act as a digital babysitter, keeping our children somehow occupied for some time and quiet. This I can testify to it, for me to keep my 3-year-old settled and quite, I normally give him a laptop, open one of the cartoons and I know this will keep him away from my attention.
Parenting is tough – just getting a free hour while home with children around for example, to prepare dinner or finish one task pending where you need concentration can feel often feel near impossible. The lure of just giving a tablet, phone or laptop in your child’s hands is understandably tempting so that you divert their attention and allow you to accomplish a task.
With children of a young age now spending more time on these smart devices, patterns which are worrying are showing up in our homes, schools, society and nation as a whole. Therefore, we have emerging problems between children and technology which needs a careful thought and an understanding by parents which will help us to regulate and put measures in place concerning children and technology.

Most of us spend hours a day using a computer. First thing which should come to our mind is What impact does it have on our bodies. We physically stress our bodies daily without realizing it by extending our wrists, slouching, sitting without foot support and straining to look at poorly placed monitors.

These activities/practices can lead to cumulative disorders or repetitive strain/stress injuries, in tern they create a life-long impact on health. Symptoms of such injuries may include pain, muscle fatigue, loss of sensation, tingling and reduced performance.

Ergonomics is a field of study that attempts to reduce strain, fatigue, and injuries by improving product design and workspace arrangement. The goal is a comfortable, relaxed posture and a safe work environment. This is very important for a healthy & prodcutive society.

Therefore, for us to mantain a good health & safety in our working area, we need to make sure we Arrange Our Workstation. When you sit down to work, always put in mind that, every time you work, take time to adjust workstations that aren't quite right in order to minimize awkward and frequently performed movements.

NOTE: Laptop computers are not ergonomically designed for prolonged use. The monitor and keyboard of a Laptop computer are position close together such that they cannot both be in good positions at the same time to the user. Therefore, if you use the Laptop for longer period, it is advisable to add a separate monitor and keyboard and the laptop can be placed on books or anything that can elevate it so the top of the screen is at eye level, then use an external keyboard so that your elbows can rest at 90° by your side. This will help you to avoid bending your head for the good of your neck and back support.

Computers with Children Part 1
In my first sharing, I talked about ICT and how it has affected our day-to-day life in all circles.
In this post, I would like to share how Computers have flooded our homes and have affected our children.
It is undisputable fact that the earlier a child is exposed to computers, the better the influence it has in their life. The development in Literacy and numeracy is high in a child exposed to technology and helps the child in academics. From my experience of training ICT to little ones, I discovered that children who were exposed to computers at an early age were performing much better than those not exposed. Why is it so? A computer given to a child with the right child friendly, educational software does the job to help a child.

Where do we miss it as Parents? Nowadays, parents provide Computers (ICT gadgets) for children in homes which is a necessity but forget to look for the right materials/software for them. So, the question comes in to say, what is a 2-year-old doing on the computer? Is the computer helping that child? Such are some questions we have. I remember when I was taking some Baby class children for computer lessons, parents would come and say what are you teaching a 2year old and when I explain they would not hesitate to sign up for Computer lessons. Therefore, parents make sure your child/children have the right software while using the computer. It should be both entertaining and educative. If the computer does not have anything educative for a child but only entertaining then it is not to be given to a child.

The other area of concern as you are exposing computers to children, is to look at the health and safety of a child. Create policies that will govern the usage of ICT in the house be it TV, Radio, Phone, Tablet, Computers, etc. What time is a child to be on the computer and for how long? Remember too much of everything is not good. Make sure you regulate, monitor and guide the usage of ICT in children.
ICT is a necessity and not a luxury so let’s have it and make use of it. Encourage children to use it in a responsible and ethical manner to have good Digital Citizens! Our children are Digital Natives. They are born with the ability to adapt to technology. They know our gadgets better than parents e.g. Remote, phones, etc even when they are not able to read!

Technology in Everyday Life
Some few years back, Technology was not a household name compared to now. These days a home without technology seems to be impossible to live in as evidenced by a number of home appliances which are operated by a microprocessor (Computerised) behind any operation. Fridges, Microwaves, Radios, Television sets, Beds, Chairs, Blankets, Dish washing, laundry machines, name any appliance found in a house today has some power of doing something amazing compared to yesteryears.
Knowing or unknowingly you will realise that technology is taking the centre stage of our daily lives and without it our day-to-day life is becoming difficult to go by. So, a bigger question is: Is this technology impacting us positively or negatively? I find this to be a born of contention between the old generation and the young generation (this depends on how you utilise the technology around you). Ultimately, technology is here to stay and has become part of our lives. From a computerised vehicle, home appliances (computerised homes), automated office systems/public kiosks, mobile gadgets, e-services (e-banking, e-commerce) etc. I have come to realise that technology is the way to go and no two ways about it.
So, what next then? Whether a digital native (someone born in time of computers) or a BBC (Born Before Computers), we all have a duty to acquire the skills which will enable us to survive in this 21st century world. Luck of skills has become the major hindrance people are failing to adapt and modernise the way they go about life.
