EU Parliament calls for independent probe into Kafwaya’s murder!

The European Parliament has called on Zambian authorities to establish independent and impartial investigations into the August 2026 murder of opposition figure and former government minister Mutotwe Kafwaya.

The call is contained in a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday as part of three resolutions addressing the human rights situations in Hong Kong, Cuba and Zambia.

Members of the European Parliament have also called for investigations into allegations of the illegal use of force, arbitrary arrests and intimidation in Zambia.

The Parliament has denounced what it describes as the misuse of Zambia’s national security laws and criminal justice system, stressing that security operations must be proportionate and conducted in accordance with the rule of law.

MEPs have further urged Zambian authorities to guarantee freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

The resolution also calls for detainees to be informed of the reasons for their arrest and the charges against them, and to have access to legal representation and a fair trial.

The European Parliament has referred to the close partnership between the European Union and Zambia, including cooperation under the Global Gateway strategy and agreements on raw materials.

It has called on the EU and its member states to raise the human rights concerns with Zambian authorities at the highest political level, closely monitor the situation and judicial proceedings, and support civil society organisations, human rights defenders and journalists.

The resolution was adopted with 562 votes in favour, one against and 33 abstentions.

MASEBO DENIES CALLING ECZ MOST CORRUPT INSTITUTION

Former Lands Minister SYLVIA MASEBO has denied reports circulating on some media platforms alleging that she described the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- as the most corrupt institution in the country.

In a statement released on her social media page today, Ms. Masebo said she had never made such remarks, either publicly or privately.

She said the statements attributed to her were false and misleading, and amounted to a deliberate misrepresentation of her position.

Ms. Masebo said that, as a long-serving public servant and political leader, she fully appreciates and respects the constitutional mandate of the ECZ as an independent institution responsible for managing the country's electoral processes.

She said the spread of misinformation not only damages reputations but also risks undermining public confidence in democratic institutions.

Ms. Masebo said she remains committed to promoting constructive dialogue, national unity and the strengthening of Zambia's democratic processes through truth, integrity and responsible leadership.

Government has rejected claims by a group of civil society organisations that Zambia is experiencing a breakdown in the rule of law, describing the allegations as sweeping and unsupported by sufficient evidence.

In a response issued by the Attorney-General, Government defended the recent cancellation of passports, saying the law allows authorities to cancel travel documents under certain circumstances and provides affected individuals with avenues to appeal.

On the treason and sedition cases involving opposition figures, the Attorney-General declined to discuss the merits, saying several related matters are before the courts.

Government also rejected claims that Mafinga South MP Faith Munthali was abducted or denied legal representation, maintaining that she was arrested by law-enforcement agencies and that no evidence had been provided to support allegations that she was denied access to lawyers.

The Attorney-General further rejected allegations that institutions including the Judiciary, Electoral Commission, Defence Force and law-enforcement agencies lack independence.

Despite the disagreement, Government said it remains open to dialogue with political parties, civil society and other stakeholders, but stressed that dialogue cannot interfere with court proceedings or legitimate criminal investigations.

The response follows a statement by five civil society organisations raising concerns about passport cancellations, prolonged detentions and the treatment of political figures following the August elections.

IN FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENT - ZAF Mourns Former Commander Lt Gen Peter Zuze

The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) has announced the death of its first indigenous Zambian commander, Lieutenant General Peter Dingiswayo Zuze (Retired).

Lt Gen Zuze died in Lusaka on Monday, 14 September 2026, following an illness.

ZAF described him as “an accomplished pilot, distinguished General and pioneering military leader who served the Republic of Zambia with honour, dedication and distinction.”

The Air Force said Lt Gen Zuze played a significant role in the early transformation and development of the service, helping lay the foundation upon which the modern ZAF was built.

“His legacy of leadership, patriotism, professionalism and selfless service to the Republic will remain an enduring part of the history of the Air Force,” ZAF stated.

ZAF Commander Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni has conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends and the wider Air Force family.

Details of the funeral service and burial will be announced later.

ECZ DEFENDS CHONGWE EAST RESULT, SAYS KAMANGA WAS DULY ELECTED

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has defended the outcome of the Chongwe East parliamentary election, maintaining that the poll was conducted freely, fairly and in accordance with electoral laws.

The position is contained in court documents filed in the High Court in an election petition brought by Sylvia Tembo Masebo against Anita Kamanga and the ECZ under Cause No. 2026/HP/EP/014.

According to an affidavit by Chongwe East Returning Officer John Musaulule Lungu, Ms Kamanga was declared duly elected Member of Parliament on August 15, 2026, after securing 16,058 votes. The election was held on August 13.

Ms Masebo is challenging the result and seeking its nullification, while the ECZ has rejected the allegations and asked the court to uphold the election.

The Commission maintains that voting, counting, tallying and declaration of results substantially complied with the Constitution, Electoral Process Act and Electoral Code of Conduct.

It argues that the petitioner must provide sufficient evidence of irregularities or malpractice capable of affecting the election outcome.

The ECZ further contends that minor procedural discrepancies cannot justify nullification unless they materially affected the final result.

It has therefore asked the High Court to dismiss the petition with costs.

The court is yet to determine the matter.
