MUNDUBILE VOWS TO UNITE ZAMBIA, TACKLE POVERTY AND SCRAP ‘OPPRESSIVE’ LAWS IN FIRST 100 DAYS

NRPUP presidential candidate Hon. Brian Mundubile has pledged to unite Zambia, tackle poverty and restore civil liberties, promising sweeping reforms within his first 100 days in office if elected president.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote at Olympia Park Secondary School in Lusaka, Hon. Mundubile said his administration would make national unity, economic recovery and the protection of fundamental freedoms its immediate priorities.

He said Zambia needed a government capable of bringing citizens together regardless of their political, regional or ethnic backgrounds, declaring that his vision was to build a “United Free Zambia.”

“This is the beginning of a United Free Zambia,” Hon. Mundubile said.

Hon. Mundubile said his government would place the fight against poverty at the centre of its national development agenda, arguing that ordinary Zambians needed tangible improvements in their livelihoods rather than political rhetoric.

He said his administration would focus on creating economic opportunities, particularly for young people, while addressing the economic hardships affecting families across the country.

The NRPUP candidate also promised to move swiftly to repeal what he described as oppressive laws that have restricted citizens' freedoms, particularly legislation affecting freedom of expression.

He said the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act would be among the laws his government would review and repeal within the first 100 days in office.

According to Hon. Mundubile, the country cannot claim to be democratic while citizens remain fearful of expressing their views.

He said restoring freedom of expression would be part of a broader programme to rebuild democratic institutions, protect citizens' rights and ensure that government works for all Zambians.

Hon. Mundubile said his administration would also work to end political divisions and create an environment where citizens could disagree politically without becoming enemies.

He said Zambia belonged to all its citizens and that the presidency should serve the entire country rather than particular political or regional interests.

The NRPUP candidate said the response to his campaign across the nine provinces he visited had convinced him that Zambians were ready for change.

“I expect to win this election because people are ready for change,” he said.

Hon. Mundubile said his first 100 days would therefore be used to begin implementing the reforms he had promised during the campaign, with particular attention to poverty reduction, economic empowerment, democratic freedoms and national reconciliation.

He said his ultimate objective was to leave Zambia more united, freer and economically stronger than he found it.

KAWANA URGES ZAMBIANS TO PROTECT FREE EDUCATION GAINS

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has urged Zambians to vote peacefully in the 2026 General Election and protect the gains made in education under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

Kawana said the country was standing at a defining moment in its democratic journey and called on eligible citizens to exercise their civic duty responsibly.

He said the government had fulfilled its commitment to addressing economic exclusion by implementing the national free education policy, which he described as a major achievement.

“Today, because of the bold and compassionate leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, we have turned that vision into an irreversible reality,” Kawana said.

He said the policy had enabled thousands of children to return to school while allowing families to avoid the burden of school fees.

Kawana said government had also recruited thousands of teachers, helping restore dignity to families that previously struggled to balance education and household needs.

“We have seen thousands of children return to school, thousands of teachers recruited, and dignity restored to families,” he said.

He urged voters to safeguard the gains achieved in education and ensure continued national development.

“Let us vote peacefully, protect our democracy and keep Zambia moving forward,” Kawana said.

He further urged citizens to preserve unity and continuous progress, saying the election was an opportunity to protect Zambia’s development gains.

“Tomorrow, as eligible citizens go to the polls, we carry with us the tangible proof of a government that listens, cares, and delivers on its promises,” he said.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO JOIN VOTING QUEUE BY 05:00 HOURS

President Hakainde Hichilema says he will be among the first voters in the queue at Kabulonga tomorrow, where he will cast his ballot in the 2026 general election.

“I’m joining the queue by 05 hours pa Kabulonga, President kaa!” President Hichilema said yesterday during a community engagement in Kalingalinga.

The President campaigned in several Lusaka constituencies, urging voters to support the UPND to sustain development gains under the New Dawn administration.

Addressing residents in Chawama, Munali and Lima, President Hichilema said voters must choose between continuing programmes such as free education, increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF), social cash transfers and school feeding, or returning to the “old days” of hardship and political vio•lence.

“Many children have gone back to school because of free education. Do you want to go back to paying school fees or do you want to continue with free education?” he asked.

At Muchinga Grounds in Lima, he pledged improved water, sanitation, drainage, roads and education infrastructure, saying his administration had employed more than 45,000 teachers and over 20,000 health workers.

“We will build more health centres, more maternity wings. I want women to give birth safely and not d•ie,” he said.

He also promised increased social cash transfers, more schools, skills-training facilities and improved security, while urging voters to reject a return to the “old days of pangas.”

The Zambia Police Service has assured the nation that it is fully prepared to provide security before, during and after Thursday's general elections.
Inspector General of Police GRAPHEL MUSAMBA says the Service has finalized the deployment of officers to polling stations and totaling centers across the country as part of the 2026 Electoral Security Plan.
Mr. MUSAMBA says additional police officers have been deployed to enhance visibility, improve response times and ensure that every eligible voter is able to cast their vote freely, peacefully and without intimidation.
He says although a few isolated incidents of political violence were recorded during the campaign period, the overall campaigns have remained generally peaceful.
The Inspector General has urged members of the public to maintain peace by casting their votes and leaving polling stations, while advising them to obtain election results only from official sources and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
Mr. MUSAMBA has also warned that anyone found committing electoral offences, engaging in violence, or using digital platforms to spread hate speech, misinformation or incitement will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He has further directed all police officers to remain professional, impartial and respectful of human rights while enforcing the law without fear or favour.
The Inspector General has called on all Zambians to safeguard peace and demonstrate that Zambia remains a mature democracy where elections are conducted peacefully.

Tonse Alliance mayoral candidate goes in for threatening violence

THE Ndola Magistrate Court has sentenced Tonse Alliance mayoral candidate Jones Kalyati to one year imprisonment with hard labour after convicting him of threatening to shoot a resident he said was a UPND cadre involved in illegal land allocations.

Kalyati, 49, who is contesting the Ndola mayoral seat on the Resolute Party ticket, was found guilty on one count of threatening violence.

The court heard that on January 24, 2026, Kalyati threatened to shoot Alexander Mwamba, whom he accused of participating in illegal land dealings.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Brian Simachela said the prosecution had called five witnesses, while the defence presented four. He noted that direct evidence linked Kalyati to the offence, with witnesses testifying that he pointed a gun at Mwamba.

The court dismissed photographs produced by Kalyati in his defence, ruling that they were taken on January 25, 2026, by another person, contrary to his claim. Magistrate Simachela said the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence to prove the charge.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Kenneth Tembo pleaded for leniency, arguing that Kalyati was a first offender, remorseful, and aspiring to public office.

Magistrate Simachela, however, said Kalyati was expected to conduct himself in a manner befitting a mayoral candidate.

“You are supposed to conduct yourself as a mayor and not like you are from the street. So I exercise my maximum leniency by sentencing you to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour effective today,” he said.

Magistrate Simachela told Kalyati he had the right to appeal against the sentence within 14 days.

SISHUWA URGES VOTERS TO USE A CROSS WHEN MARKING BALLOTS

University of Cape Town honorary research associate Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa has advised Zambian voters to use a cross when marking their ballot papers in Thursday’s General Election.

Dr Sishuwa, who is also a Senior Lecturer in History at Stellenbosch University, said the use of a cross is provided for under Zambia’s electoral regulations governing voting procedures at polling stations.

“VOTER EDUCATION: In Zambia, the only valid way to mark a ballot paper when casting one’s vote in a polling station is using a cross,” Dr Sishuwa wrote on X.

He cited Regulation 33(d) of the Electoral Process (General) Regulations of 2016, which requires a voter, after receiving a ballot paper, to enter the voting compartment and secretly indicate their choice by marking the ballot with a cross in the appropriate place.

Dr Sishuwa explained that a cross could take the form of an “X” or “+”, consisting of two lines intersecting each other.

He further warned voters against using ticks or other markings, saying such marks could result in a ballot being rejected.

“A TICK or any mark other than a CROSS on a ballot results in a SPOILT ballot. That is the position of the law ahead of Thursday’s general election,” he wrote.
